Wylie Lions Club
Helen Keller said “Alone, we can do so little.
Together, we can do so much.”
We are Lions – We Serve.
You may not even be aware that the Lions Club is active in your community. - But we are here!
Originally, the Lions Club’s charter was to serve the needs of the blind and visually impaired in communities throughout the world. Helen Keller challenged the Lions to take on this largely unsupported cause back in 1925. This is still a primary need that we strive to meet But modem day dubs serve their communities in many ways in addition to sight-related issues
The Wylie Lions Club was formed in 2002 and is a non-profit service organization. Our motto is “We Serve” and our members do just that! A few of the programs provided are:
EDUCATION SUPPORT: In 2010, we awarded a $1000 scholarship to a deserving Wylie student. Helping children succeed is especially important to the Wylie Lions Club. In addition to scholarship programs, we sponsor student speaker programs that allow students to fine tune their communications skills and vie for additional scholarship money.
VISION SERVICES: With the help of school nurses and area opticians, we are able to provide eye care and corrective lenses, at no charge, to many students who may not otherwise have access to vision correction. Working with school nurses we purchase memberships to the National Association of School Nurses which provides vouchers for vision exams and lenses.
COMMUNITY PROJECTS: We have supported community projects such as the Pirate Cove Playground, a unique and amazing play facility located in Founders Park. The playground was planned, designed and constructed by the members of the community. We support the Reach for a Star program in obtaining Christmas gifts for the less fortunate in our community and the Wylie Christian Care Center which supports those in need in our community. These are just a few of the key community programs we support with both financial assistance and volunteer labor.
CAMPS FOR THE DISABLED: Texas Lions Camp is a residential camping facility for children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer. The Camp is located on over 500 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, and is designed to introduce the "Can Do" philosophy to children dealing with special medical conditions. Seeing a wheelchair bound child ride a horse for the first time is a life altering experience — for both the child and the counselor! Children learn that disabilities are only challenges to be met - not insurmountable obstacles. The confidence this experience provides is invaluable. And the Lionsprovide the camp at no charge to the camper!
