Wilson Evening Lions Club Projects

The Wilson Evening Lions Club supports the core mission of Lions Clubs International and NC Lions Club, Inc.  Our local projects focus on the blind and visually impaired, as well as the deaf and hard of hearing, in Wilson and Wilson County.

Vision Screening in the Schools:  Wilson Evening partnered with the Wilson Luncheon Lions club to offer vision screening in the third grade of every school in Wilson County in the fall of 2012.  In the spring of 2013, the clubs will return to the schools and screen second graders so that starting in the fall of 2013, the annual screening will occur at the second-grade level, as recommended by Prevent Blindness North Carolina.

Vision Van:  Wilson Evening members volunteered to assist the Wilson Luncheon Lions club when it sponsored the Vision Van at Wilson Community Health Center on Oct. 18, 2012.  This event provided us our first opportunity to offer hearing screening as well as vision screening to anyone who signed up.  The Wilson Evening Lions club plans to sponsor the Vision Van in March 2013.

Recycle Eyeglasses:  Wilson Evening is placing new collection boxes that are attached to a small wooden table, which offers both added visibility and stability for the boxes.

Broom Sales:  Wilson Evening places and maintains boxes of brooms and scrubbies at local businesses.

Christmas Cheer:  Wilson Evening will distribute gift cards, accompanied by goody boxes, to 10 blind or visually-impaired individuals who are in need.

Ring the Bell for the Salvation Army:  On Dec. 1, 2012, Wilson Evening will assist the Salvation Army in its efforts to raise money for the less fortunate.

Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing:  Wilson Evening funds an annual scholarship for a rising senior in Barton College's Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (K-12) program.

Eastern NC School for the Deaf:  Wilson Evening will partner with Wilson Luncheon to refurbish the recreation room at ENCSD in early 2013.

Camp Dogwood:  Wilson Evening sells raffle tickets to support NC Lions Club, Inc's operations fund for Camp Dogwood, a Resort for the Blind.

Down East Radio Reading Service:  Wilson Evening supports the Down East Radio Reading Service, which provides 24/7 service to the blind and print-impaired.

National Federation of the Blind:  Wilson Evening supports the Wilson chapter of the National Federation of the Blind.

VIP Fishing Tournament:  Wilson Evening purchases golf balls in the Golf Ball Drop fundraiser for the VIP Fishing Tournament.
