Warrenton Lions Club

End of Year Report (2022-2023)

The Lions motto is ‘We Serve’ and the Warrenton Lions Club strives to fulfill that charge in several different ways. We have members who conduct Sight and Hearing Screenings, we provide glasses and eye exams to members of the community in need, we provide scholarships to student at local high schools, and aid various local and international activities by raising funds to support them.

The Warrenton Lions Club welcomed 11 members from the Warrenton Sunrise Club to our club on July 1, 2022. In addition to the former Sunrise club transfer, the club welcomed two new members, but unfortunately one longtime member died. Our Club reported over 2,600 service hours and over 100 service activities.

During the past Lion’s year (July 2022-June 2023) we visited 17 public schools and provided vision and hearing screenings for 2379 students resulting in 267 vision and 160 hearing referrals. We also tested the vision of 68 head start students.

Providing glasses to individuals referred to us by Social Services or the Free Clinic is another priority for our club. We approved eye glasses for 35 individuals and provided or helped pay for eye exams for those individuals.  In addition, we collected 2083 pairs of used eye glasses for recycling and use by those in need. Our club provided two $2,500 dollar scholarships, one to a student at Fauquier High School and another to a student from Kettle Run High School.

Our club held three social events for the members.  We held a combined social and fund-raising event in conjunction with the Remington Lions Club. For this event we cosponsored the Crestmen Quartet for a fund-raising public performance at the Remington Lions Club house. We also held a Holiday

Luncheon at the Presbyterian Church and had a social celebration in conjunction with the installation of new officers for the 2023-2024 Lions year.

 All the money Lions collect from the public via various fund raisers goes back to the public.

During this Lions year we donated $1,100 to LCIF, $300 to the Fauquier Free Clinic, $300 to Hospice of Fauquier County, $200 to the Fauquier Family Shelter, and $200 to Fauquier Boys & Girls Club. In addition, we gave $1,250 to other organizations such as the Leader Dogs for the Blind. We spent $1,500 for Eye exams and eye glasses for those in need.

The primary source for funds for our services and donations came from the profits we made from the following sources:

  • Program and pin sales at two Gold Cup Races of approximately $1,729;
  • Christmas Ornament sales of $5,138;
  • Crestmen Concert $1,387;
  • Fall Festival broom sales of $1,034
  • and from Shrimp Sales $1,569.

The Warrenton Lions Club also collected over 1,000 pounds of plastic bags and other Number 2 and 4 plastic material in the last two years. The collection effort was part of a program sponsored by the TREX Corporation that takes these plastics materials and converts them to benches, boards and other useful products. The TREX Corporation provided two very nice benches to our Club as a reward. The two benches with Lions signs have been installed at local athletic fields in Warrenton.

Our club also participated in several service events; to include the Fauquier County Health Fair and the Remington Health Fair.  And In support of our local Parks and Recreation, we painted/stained a Kiosk and shelter at Crocket Park.
