Lionism Facts
Who Are the Lions? We are members of the world's largest service organization. There are over 1,400,000 members in over 44,000 clubs in 210 geographic areas. The Upper Perkiomen Valley Lions Club is comprised of leading citizens totaling approximately 35 men and women. From the start, the emphasis has been on service in all forms to less fortunate members of the community.
Lions Clubs began in the United States on June 7, 1917 when a group of independent clubs responded to an ideal presented by a young Chicago insurance agent, Melvin Jones. The ideal was one of public service as a group to their fellow men without regard to politics, religion, race or personal interests.
Helen Keller challenged the Lions in 1924 to be Knights for the Blind and ever since sight related projects have been our main thrust.
Are Lions for Men Only? Not at all! Women have been serving in Lions Clubs for many years.
100% of every dollar collected from the public goes to charity. All club expenses come from club dues.
