On January 28th 1952 a group of 37 men, meet for the first time to organize the Mathews Lions Club. Initially the Mathews Lions Club was mainly made up of men that lived on Mathews Mill Village and worked at Mathews Mill, that belonged to Greenwood Mills. They first meet upstairs over the Mathews Mill Company Store which was a multi-purpose auditorium with a stage and used for beauty pagents, etc. The Mathews Lions Club meet on the right side upstairs and the Mathews Masonic Lodge meet on the left side. The mill has been torn down and the company store closed many years ago, but the Mathews Masonic Lodge still meets upstairs over the old Mathews Mill Village Company Store. The Mathews Lions Club has meet in several locations over the years and now meets at Avery's Resturant on Hwy. 34. We still have one charter member from that very first meeting over 62 years ago, he is Lion Hilton Dodgen and is 92.
The Mathews Lions Club is part of District 32-D, Region 2, Zone 2-B (South Carolina) which is part of Lions Clubs International (LCI), the world's largest service organization. Our club supports and provides financial aid to the district, state, and international sight projects and are also involved in community programs.
