Lions club of Thalavady was formed as a member club of Lions club International in the Lions district of Kottayam 318 E on 05.04.2011. The club was sponsored by Lions club of Edathua and Ln P.T Joseph was the advisor. Charter day of this club was on 25.06.2011 and the function was chaired by the then District Governor MJF Ln. Paul Mathai. New members were inducted by Ist Vice District Governor MJF Ln Er Suresh Joseph and office bearers were installed by IInd V.D.G MJF Ln Er D. Dharmarajan. The club had an initial strength of 28 members from the service minded community in this area.
Thalavady is a beautiful and historical village in the world famous Kuttanadu area of the God’s own country. The place is surrounded by major rivers of Pampa, Achenkoil and Manimala with many rivulets and canals. Major agriculture is paddy which is followed by coconut and other vegetables. Having population about 30,000, mainly farmers who toil hard in paddy fields to get their ends meet. Work is worship for them and enjoy with folk songs as they are engaged in field jobs.
This place has been in the fore front in education since very early days. Many eminent personalities like Sardar K.M.Panicker, who was lieutenant to our first central home minister, who made significant contribution in the formation of Indian union and thereafter forming linguistic states, had his schooling here, as the place had the only English medium school then in Kuttanadu area. Great Sanskrit scholar Chalunkal Kittayi Asan, as popularly called, was also a native of this place. Thalavady has got rich cultural heritage as well. Many artists in this place have made significant contribution towards ‘Kathakali’ and other classical dance forms. Due to its cultural importance, erstwhile king of Chembakassery used to come first to this place in his regular country visit. Present Govt High School at Thalavady was his palace once and it still stands majestically proving its past glory. Incidently, the Govt High School is celebrating its centinnery year in 2015-16 with wide participation of its Alumnii and administartors in district and state levels. Neerattupram ‘Pampa’ boat race, conducted annually in the river Pampa during Onam festival is one of the incredible attractions for tourists.
Lions club of Thalavady has taken initiatives in many service oriented activities since inception. Conducting medical camps, distribution of food materials, clothes etc to the inmates of orphanage, giving uniforms and books to the less fortunate students, helping patients by issuing free medical cards etc are a few of the service works taken-up in the last two years. ‘Fragrance of Love’- the slogan of the present District Governor MJF Ln. BINU GEORGE and ‘we serve’ the motto of our great organization are the inspiring spirit for the members of this club to undertake community services.
