Our club was involved in a unique fund raising project in September 2011 when we were approached by MMM Group from Saskatoon. They were contracted by the city to draw up a Transportation Master Plan for Swift Current. Part of the project involved a traffic count and the Lions were asked to supply a "team" to do this work. We also had some help from the local Elks Lodge and a couple of friends to complete the team. The project involved parking safely at a designated intersection and monitoring traffic from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM. We had to count the number of vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, cyclists, pedestrians) crossing the intersection and which way they turned. The survey took place over three days with team members doing a different intersection each day. It was a good fund-raiser for the club and members enjoyed the experience. We also feel that our personal driving habits may be improved somewhat after observing some of the bone-headed and dangerous driving by some of the vehicles we counted! We are pleased that MMM Group asked us to work on the survey. The funds generated will help us fulfill our commitments in the community.
November 2011 - Our club made a donation of $2000 to the Lions Foundation of Canada for Hearing Dog sponsorship. This donation qualified for a matching grant by an anonymous donor from western Canada.
Spring 2012 - we had a presentation from the Director of the West Bank Bible Camp who attended a meeting to talk about their camping programs and the need for a new swimming facility. The club made a donation to assist with their fund-raising efforts. The camp has over 2000 campers annually - a well-used facility.
September 24, 2012 - Lions donned their yellow t-shirts to attend the CTV Hometown Tour at Market Square in downtown Swift Current. We received comments from dignitaries about how nice it was to see the group showing their "colours". Donations were made to the Salvation Army Foodbank, and the BBQ proceeds went to the United Way. We cheered loudly when instructed by the program director and generally took part in festivities. A special treat was when Premier Brad Wall stopped to chat and agreed to have his picture taken with the group. Kudos to Cindy Penner for sending the nomination in, and to the city and all involved for giving us an opportunity to show our civic pride. (See picture in Gallery page).
May 23, 2013 - Lion Larry O'Donnell spoke to the Club regarding a new and improved building at Camp Shagabec to replace the current facility which dates back to the '40s. The club approved a donation for their fund-raising campaign.
May 29 & 30, 2013 - Lions built 10 garden boxes at the Salvation Army site. These 6'x3'x3' boxes were filled with soil and planted to vegetables to supply fresh veggies to the Food Bank for the summer. The project was spear-headed by former Lions member Caroline Barrington.
