St. Helens Lions Club Projects
Sight & Hearing Assistance
We provide vision or hearing exams and financial support for eyeglasses or hearing aids for members of our community who are in financial need.
School Vision Screening
Our members assist the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation in checking the vision of elementary students in the St. Helens School District and Rainier schools, and alerting school nurses of any detected vision defects or problems.
Recycling Used Eyeglasses
Our Club collects used eyeglasses, which are graded by prescription, and distributed to people who live in countries or geographic areas where new glasses are not affordable.
Community Flag Display
Members line the main streets of St. Helens and Highway 30 with over 250 large American flags on 7 federal patriotic holidays throughout the year.
Backpack Program
Members work with the United Methodist Church and the Columbia Pacific Food Bank to provide a bag of food each weekend of the school year to children in need in the St. Helens School District. The bags include 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners plus snacks.
Flags for First Graders
A traditional Lions project, we provide small American flags and basic flag history and etiquette to each first grader in the St. Helens District.
McCormick Park Exercise Path
Lions maintain exercise stations situated on a path through the City park. The exercise stations were originally installed as an Eagle Scout project.
Recycling
Our Club collects and recycles film plastic (bags) which is sent to the Trex company as part of a program in which Trex supports non-profit organizations. Since October of 2018, we have recycled over 50,000 pounds of plastic and "earned" over 90 benches made of Trex composite material, which we have donated to be placed in parks, at schools, and many other locations in our community.
Diabetes
The St. Helens Lions support Gales Creek Camp, which is a summer camp for children living with Type 1 diabetes. We also conduct a Diabetes Screening event in St. Helens.
Columbia City Spring Clean-up Day
In conjunction with Earth Day, Lions help coordinate this event in which we collect such things as yard debris, tires, scrap metal and old appliances, as well as picking up litter along the streets of Columbia City.
Litter Pick-up
Members pick up littler in city parks and throughout our community as part of our environmental committment.
Youth
The St. Helens Lions Club supports youth activities to include providing a post- secondary scholarship to a deserving St. Helens student, an opportunity to participate in the HOBY Youth Leadership program, etc.
Childhood Cancer
Lions support Ronald McDonald House and cancer patients with donations of books, quilts, pillowcases, and art supplies. Beverage can tabs are collected as a fundraiser for Rondald McDonald House.
