Free Annual Children’s Vision Screening Service

The Lions Club of Sodus provides free annual vision screening services for all children ages 6 months to 17 years, with parental consent, as part of the long-standing Lions KidSightUSA Foundation initiative. https://www.lionskidsightusa.org/aboutus

A child’s vision is important to us as 80% of their learning comes through their eyes. Statistics show that nearly one in five children have a vision problem that can lead to an adverse effect on their performance in school. This is an opportunity to ensure that vision problems are detected early, where treatment is most effective.

This screening can detect conditions that could place your child at risk for developing amblyopia “lazy eye”, astigmatism “blurred vision”, near and far sightedness, misaligned eyes, unequal power and pupil size. All of these conditions, if left untreated, can interfere with a child’s reading and learning capabilities.

The screening is conducted by a certified screener, under the guidance of optometrist Dr. Edward V. Cordes, using a highly specialized vision camera that is rated at 95% accuracy. Screenings are performed in a dimly lit room in order to dilate the pupils, so eye drops are never used. The screening is contactless and is completed in less than a minute. If the results of the screening indicate an abnormality, a computer printout of the screening results are provided to the parent/guardian for further evaluation and treatment by an eye care professional of their choosing.

Please note that this vision screening IS NOT a comprehensive eye examination and it will not identify every child with an eye problem. If a comprehensive eye exam is desired, please consult with an eye care professional.

To schedule a free vision screening event for your organization, request a parental consent form or if you would like additional information, please contact Lions Club member Jay Woodruff at (315) 439-2412 or lionjay0912@yahoo.com.
