Club Projects

Throughout our 80+ year history, the Shelby Lions Club has continued a continuous record of achievement through unselfish work and volunteering of talents to meet the needs of the local community.  From the very beginning, Shelby Lions were called to serve.

Through the years, the club has been involved in too many projects to mention here, but suffice it to say, the Lions have always stepped up to serve local community needs.

1983 / 84:  The Shelby Lions Club contracted with Cleveland County Department of Social Services to distribute surplus government food commodities.  This project continues even today.  Four times per year, club members and other community volunteers gather at the Cleveland Fairgrounds to distribute surplus food to qualified individuals.  The surplus food is part of the North Carolina TEFAP program.  Quarterly, the Lions Club processes applications from approximately 2,700 Cleveland County households and distributes approximately 100,000 pounds of food.

1984 / 85:  The Shelby Lions Club made application for a H.U.D. loan to build a senior housing complex.  After a long and tedious approval process, the Lions Senior Village was built and dedicated in 1986.  The complex consists of 40 one bedroom apartments.  Some Lions members continue to serve on the Board of Directors for the Lions Senior Village.
