San Diego STARS (SDS) Lions Club 2023-2024 Projects
Purse for a Cause. We started this project because 80% of our club members are women who all love purses, thus, we collectively own a handful of extra pre-loved purses that are just collecting dust in our closets. We all agreed that it is not just a luxury item for women, but also a necessity. Purses are used to carry various personal items including money, wallet, makeup, phone, keys, and even food or medicine. We all decided that it is high time to share with other women purses that we seldom use. We donated our own purses and asked our friends and relatives to donate, as well, for our trip to the Philippines last February 2023. We were able to collect about 40 purses and wallets for our Philippine mission.
While there, we invited working women who we thought would have good use for some of these purses. We raffled them to assign the order of who had first, second, third, pick, and so on. The project turned out to be very successful. We organized two Purse for a Cause events, and we plan to do this again when we return to the Philippines in 2024. The look on the faces of the recipients was icing on the cake. They were so happy to receive these pre-loved purses that they volunteered to help us with subsequent projects in the Philippines.
Flowers, Just Because. A flower is the part of a plant which is often brightly colored and grows above the stem. Flowers come in all shapes and sizes, but what make them truly stand apart from each other are their shape, vibrant colors, and their distinct smell. With all these factors, flowers often symbolize love and joy, friendship and purity, and forgiveness and death, as well. SDS thought of the idea of sharing their feelings with different people through flowers…just because.
We have been offering flowers to churches. On Mother’s Day 2023, we visited and brought flowers to senior care homes and organizations that cater to people with mental disabilities. We attended events to give flowers to moms and dads to celebrate them and we even offered flowers to random people who just need a simple gift of joy and put a smile on their face. Just the act of giving these flowers made us feel blessed. The sight of beautiful fresh flowers has a calming and positive effect on the recipient, which is why giving and receiving flowers has been part of human history since time immemorial.
Go Green. Go Green means becoming more environmentally aware and changing one’s behavior and lifestyle to reduce the amount of pollution and waste we generate. Clean air, water, climate, soil, natural vegetation, and landforms are all environmental factors. Any action we take that contributes to sustainable living makes a positive impact on the environment. The Earth’s ecosystem depends highly on its inhabitants, thus, it is important for every individual to contribute toward saving and protecting our environment.
SDS is going GREEN. Green Activities involve planting, trimming, harvesting, adding, removing, or making other changes to the trees, shrubs, grass, plants, vegetation, etc. We have been donating succulent plants and helping plant them. We also organized events to clean parks. SDS has been making flower arrangements using succulents and giving them as gifts or donating them to other Lions Clubs for their fund raising.
STARS Entertainment and Event Planning
SDS knows how to put a good event no matter how big or small. We put our boundless talents to work to provide great, meaningful, and memorable events. We meticulously design, decorate, and plan the theme of each party. We are very savvy in securing the right resources for supplies, materials, products, and other talents for any event.
We have been instrumental in organizing club events like installation of officers, Christmas parties, fund raising, and club member celebrations like birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and showers, etc. SDS showcases fashion shows and choreographed dance routines and regularly provides free catered food to various Club events. They even have a Junior Band perform on community events, Lions Club parties or just sing Christmas carols at senior care homes and churches to entertain the homeless people in downtown San Diego. SDS believes that sharing simple acts of kindness and providing service with a smile go a long way in making a difference in one’s existence and wellbeing.
