CLUB PROJECTS
We support the many services provided by both the Lions Club International Foundation and North Carolina Lions Inc., which are both registered as tax-exempt, charitable organizations.
All Lions Clubs welcome the donation of used eyeglasses. The glasses are refurbished and given to people around the world who need them. Eyeglass collection boxes are located in several businesses throughout Rutherford County.
Locally, we help individuals obtain glasses, receive eye exams, and get hearing aids. We also sponsor local visually impaired people to attend Camp Dogwood, which is a camp for blind and visually impaired adults and children that is owned and operated by the NC Lions. It is located on Lake Norman.
We also support several local charitable events for the visually impaired, including the annual Christmas Party for county residents, which our club began in 1970.
Each Lions Club has its own individual way of raising funds for its various projects. Our club has four major fundraisers a year--a golf tournament, a Boston Butt sales event, and two "Candy Days." The majority of our funds are raised through our annual golf tournament in April or May. The donations from our sponsors along with the fees paid by the golfers go a long way to meeting our annual goal. We have a Boston Butt sales event before Thanksgiving. We also hold two "Candy Days" during the year--once in the Fall and once in the Spring. A Candy Day is one where our members gather at an intersection in the Rutherfordton and Spindale area to sell brooms to motorists, receive donations from them, and hand out candy rolls to them.
