Reno Plumb Lane Lions Club Projects
AIR RACES BREAKFAST: is held Thursday through Sunday of the September National Air Races. We assist Boy Scout Troop 88 in preparing and serving eggs, sausage, pancakes and beverages. Lion Dave Stroffe chairs this event.
CAMP DAT-SO-LA-LEE: We try to sponsor two campers each summer. The ages of the campers are 10 and 11. The coordinator finds campers through the school counselors and sees that registration papers are completed on time. The camp is located in Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains near Elko, NV. Camp in summer 2021 will hopefully be held in the original location as volunteers are trying to rebuild the structures that were destroyed by a fire during the fall of 2018. Lion Linda Dovalis is the camp coordinator.
CHRISTMAS BASKETS: For several days in mid-December the Reno Plumb Lane Lions will gather, sort and pack food and paper goods for 120 recipients. The recipients are low-income seniors and/or low-income veterans. Each will receive two boxes that will include meat, a variety of non-perishable food and a variety of paper products.
LIONS FLAG DAY: During the month of February, Lions Flag Day will be held at a local elementary school. Several Lions will distribute small American Flags and a paper describing the American Flag to 3rd graders. Lion Linda Dovalis chairs that committee.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION: The teachers of grades one through four at Coral Academy of Science choose a Student of the Month. The Lions arrive at school after lunch for an assembly during which a Lion presents each Student of the Month with a lion statuette with the student’s name and the month engraved on it. Lion Cecilia Deal chairs this committee.
STUDENT SPEAKERS CONTEST: On a Saturday in mid January, several high school students from Reno High and Galena High will participate in the Reno Plumb Lane Lions Club Student Speaker Contest. The topic this year is "Can Distance Learning Provide a Classroom Quality Education?” The winner of that contest will speak again at the Lions Zone 1-B contest which will take place before February 20. That will be followed by the Region I contest which will be scheduled before March 20. The final District Contest will be in Minden, NV on Saturday, April 24, 2021. Lion Betty Mullins is the chair of that committee.
WHITE CANE DAYS: During this event funds are collected by members usually at a market. The funds are used for sight conservation projects. The Lions give small white canes to the donors. May and October are the months for this activity. Lion David Stroffe is the chairman.
