HISTORY OF QUEZON CITY MALAYA LIONS CLUB
HALL OF FAMER OF DISTRICT 301-D1
A great club organized by a dedicated Lion sometime in January 1987, who thought of bringing together the people and their resources to fulfill and achieve common aspirations… the energetic man in the person of Atty. Ely Gabaldon. His dream for the goodness of the club was supported by another competent man, Lion Vic San Buenaventura, who was elected as the club’s Charter President.
The Quezon City MALAYA Lions Club embodies the ideals of our voluntary services to humanity. Its pursuance towards the true spirit of Lionism became its foundation in every activity it conducts. The name MALAYA stands for Movement of Achievers for Liberty, Advancement and Yearning to serve All. It was suggested by Lion Ernie Salvador, after considering several names proposed by other charter members. Meanwhile, the Malaya emblem was conceptualized by Lion Tony Quijano, showing outreach arms with hands setting free a dove.
The organizational meetings were subsequently held at the Little Quiapo Restaurant, Matalino St., Diliman, Quezon City. Resource speakers from District 301-D1 were in attendance led by the guiding Lion, Engr. Romy Veloso, the Charter President of Sikatuna Central Lions Club.
It was in September 21, 1987, when the charter membership of Q.C. Malaya Lions Club was officially recognized by the Lions Clubs International. In March 3, 1988, the group held its Charter Presentation at the Camelot Hotel. The affair was well attended by Lion dignitaries from District 301-D1 and other Lion members from other clubs. This gave birth to a new Lions Club consisting of twenty seven (27) members, majority of whom were Quezon City Hall employees, while the rest were from the private sector.
The main thrust of the club is to get involved actively in various civic, medical, dental and eye screening projects which to date has gone as far as Zamboanga City in the south and Abulog, Cagayan in the north with the initiative of a very ambitious but very hardworking yet a very simple and humble man in the person of Lion Past President Bobby Inumerable (LY 2000-2001). It was during his time that Malaya Lions Club got rejuvenated and became the No.1 club that year thus spearheading to the very unprecedented HALL OF FAME AWARD.
The following year was another successful year for the club becoming again the No.1 club for the second consecutive year under the stewardship of Lion PP Manny Bautista. (LY 2001-2002)
Yet the following year was most prestigious when Q.C. Malaya was again No.1 for the third consecutive year thus coveting the Hall of Fame Award. This was under the administration of Lion PP Gregg Bituin. (LY 2002-2003).
During the LY 2006-2007. our beloved Charter President Vic San Buenaventura succumbed to a brain attack, on his demise, the club sorely missed the jolly fixture of his presence in every club meetings and medical missions thereafter.
At present, the Quezon City Malaya Lions Club has twenty one (21) strong quality members. We aim to grow more in the future. We hope and aspire the Spirit of Lionism by which the club was formed will keep on inspiring us to serve.
