A Journey Through History

The Pine Level Lions Club was organized May, 1945 A.D. receiving its original charter yet it became defunct in January, 1948 A.D. and thus reorganized on January 16th. 1950 A.D., its present charter was issued on the 1st. of March 1950 A.D..

Its sponsoring Club was the Princeton Lions Club for both charters.

The charter members in 1945 A.D. were Walter Godwin, Doc R. Oliver, William B. Oliver, J.E. Parker, B.B. Parker, W.C. Wilkins, Rudolph E. Oliver, James L. Peedin.

The following became the charter members under the 1950 A.D. reorganization of the Pine Level Lions Club  William T. Bachelor, Clyde L. Creech, Levey P. Creech, Gordon L. Godwin, Norwood G. Jones, Walter B. Godwin, Rev.J.R. Jones, Alvin Kornegay Jr., H.G. Kornegay, Clyde Mozingo, Dr. D. Buren Oliver, Doc R. Oliver, Rudolph E. Oliver, William B. Oliver, B.B.Parker, J.E. Parker, James L. Peedin, Clarence W. Strickland, J.E. Strickland, Ralph S. Styron, Simon D. Styron, F..B. Trivette, J.W. Walters, Ashton Wiggs, W.C. Wilkins, W.E. Warren Jr., Edward L. White, Marvin W, White.

During the early 1950s A.D. Lion Joseph B. Dupree Sr. had a block building, which  Lion Rudolph E. Oliver purchased with its surrounding land for the Club to use, having a sign, Pine Level Lions Den painted on the front of the building.

Lion Rudolph E. Oliver donated this building and land through legal deed to the Pine Level Lions Club on the 8th day of April 1954 A.D., and it is still in use today by the Club.

Located outside of the Town of Pine Level in the countryside toward Selma, the building at one time was a tavern.Today alcoholic beverages are never allowed on the property or in the Lions Den.

Throughout the years it has been bricked, a porch added, and a new roof and sign," Pine Level Lions Club Chartered 1950 We Serve", containing the Lions Logo.

Before Lion Rudolph E. Oliver donated the Lions Den the Pine Level Lions Club members used the little white building attached to the Pine Level High School Gym for their meetings. The Woman’s Club and other Town of Pine Level civic groups also used the little white building until each one also obtained their own buildings.

At onetime many years ago the Club had a pet goat, which was sent to the home of any member, which did not attend a meeting, and that goat was under their care to feed till the next meeting in a fortnight.

When two members were absent then one would keep the goat for one week and then the other the next week before the next Club meeting.

Because of the goat most members made it to the Club meetings so they would not have to take the goat home, which was known to eat any rose bush it could find.

Our Club is amongst the oldest in District 31 N, Zone 8 meeting the 1st. &  3rd. Mon. at  7  PM.

In 1950 A.D. the Club started many charities, which remain active as local traditions.

Our  annual Turkey shoot is held every November at Sam Godwin Park in the Town of Pine Level. Formerly held at the Club the Turkey Shoot was started in 1961 A.D.. Then there is the school Facility Night Banquet since 1962 A.D. our Club has provided a free banquet for the entire staff of our local school, originally the 1st. - 12th. Grades - Pine Level High School, and since 1983 A.D. our Club has provided fruit baskets at Christmas every year for local Widows.

Since 1953 A.D. our Club has produced as a fundraising project our annual Club Calendar with color picture including the meeting dates of our Club and the local Fire Department, also including the birthdays, anniversaries and memorials of our local families. Everyone really enjoys the calendar and the brooms we sell at the Town Market, and the Lions candy mints we sell at local community stores.

The Pine Level Lions Club promoted an annual charity horse show, with participants from across America, which performed for prizes to the enjoyment of local children and their parents. It was replaced in 2008 A.D. by our annual Lions Charity Golf Tournament which is held each year at the Cardinal Country Club in Pine Level North Carolina.

Our Club supports many annual projects such as the Lions Leader Dog League For The Blind, White Cane, Boys & Girls Home and the Lions Cottage at Lake Waccamaw,Camp Dogwood, Relay for Life, Lions Vision Van, N.C. Lions Foundation (NC Lions Inc), LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation).

“Sight – First Program” many children and adults now see more clearly.

Our Club has supported both the first and second campaigns for Sight First.

Sight: First - Lions Conquering Blindness

Our Club has provided local tornado relief, hurricane relief and in Haiti, New Zealand and Japan we have provided disaster relief. Eighty-five percent of all monies raised by the Pine Level Lions Club is used to give support to the local communities and the citizens of North Carolina.

We provide Eye exams and Eyeglasses to lower income individuals in need which cannot obtain government assistance. We also support the local Girl and Boy Scouting Programs, and Elderly Assistance Projects.

Our Club by unanimous vote sponsored a new Kenly Lions Club, in Kenly, N.C. and our Club has also by unanimous vote decided to sponsor a Leo Club in zone 8 at North Johnston High School.

Leo Clubs provide a youth leadership program which teaches High School students and College level individuals business skills with an Infosys placed on community service.

When you see the American Red Cross and the International Red Cross working to help those in need it is always local Lions Members that are working right beside of them, as the world’s largest civic club. Every male Lions member united together with every female Lioness member, working together make up the international humanitarian army of one million three hundred thousand volunteers worldwide thus enforcing our, Motto:  “We Serve.”

Lions Clubs International

Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States in 1917 A.D. by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman. Jones asked, with regard to his colleagues, "What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?" Jones' personal code, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else," reminds many Lions of the importance of community service.

The Lions motto is “We Serve.” Local Lions Club programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and other programs.

CLUB OBJECTS

The stated purposes of Lions Clubs International are:

To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.

To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.

To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.

To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.

To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.

To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

Charitable work

Much of the focus of Lions Clubs International work as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes.

All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by Lion members.

Some of the money raised for a club’s charity account goes toward projects that benefit the local community of an individual club.

Service projects

Lions Clubs plan and participate in a wide variety of service projects that meet the international goals of Lions Clubs International as well as the needs of their local communities.

Examples include donations to hospices,or community campaigns such as Message in a bottle, a United Kingdom initiative which places a plastic bottle with critical medical information inside the refrigerators of vulnerable people and money is also raised for international purposes.

Some of this is donated in reaction to events such as the 2004 A.D. Indian Ocean earthquake. Other money is used to support international campaigns, coordinated by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), such as Sight First and Lions World Sight Day, which was launched in   1998 A.D. to draw world media attention to the plight of sight loss in the third world.

Lions focus on work for the blind and visually impaired began when Helen Keller addressed the International Convention at Cedar Point, Ohio on the 30th. of June 1925 A.D. and charged Lions to be Knights of the Blind.

Lions also have a strong commitment to community hearing- and cancer-screening projects. In Perth, Western Australia, Lions have conducted hearing screening for over 30 years and provided seed funding for the Lions Ear and Hearing Institute established September 9th., A.D. 2001 A.D., a center of excellence in the diagnosis, management, and research of ear and hearing disorders.

In Perth Australia, Lions have also been instrumental in the establishment of the Lions Eye Institute. In Brisbane, Queensland, the Lions Medical Research Foundation provides funding to a number of researchers.

Professor Ian Frazer's initial work, leading to the development of a HPV vaccine for cervical cancer, was funded by the Lions Medical Research Foundation.

Lions Clubs International has supported the work of the United Nations since that organization's inception in 1945 A.D., when it was one of the non-governmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, California USA.

Lions collect in excess 30 million used eyeglasses each year at selected collection points, which are then shipped to the nearest Lions Eyegass Recycling Center for processing and ditribution for free to those in need of eyeglases.

CCI  Canine Companions for Independence was founded in 1975 A.D. to train specially bred dogs to help indiviuals with disabilities other than blindness, such as Mutiple Sclerosis, and other inflammatory diseases.

 Youth Programs

Membership in LEO Clubs as Lions Clubs is by invitation only, though individuals are rarely turned away in either Clubs, and attendance at meetings is expected on a monthly or fortnightly basis.

Due to the hierarchical nature of Lions Clubs International, members have the opportunity to advance from a local club to an office at the zone, district, multiple district and international levels.

In 1986 A.D. the constitution of Lions Clubs International was amended to allow for women to become members. Since then many clubs have admitted women, but some all-male clubs still exist which is a completely appropriate choice if it is what a local Club desires .

Lioness Clubs

Lioness Club Membership is only for service-minded women

They are formed under a parent Lions Club. The Lions Club thus becomes the Parent Club for the Lioness Club. Naming of the Club is also like that of the Lions Club.

Extensions of the Lions family

In addition to adult Lions Clubs, the Lions family includes Lioness Clubs, Leo Clubs and Campus Lions Clubs. These divisions are important parts of Lions Clubs International. They allow service-minded individuals the opportunity to build better communities at the high school and college or university level.

Leo Clubs

Leo Clubs are an extension of the Lions service organization which aims to encourage community service and involvement from a young age. Leo Clubs much like Lioness Clubs are sponsored by a parent Lions Club. Leo Clubs are a common school-based organization with members between the ages of 12-18 from the same school, these are commonly referred to as Alpha Leo Clubs.

Community based clubs also exist, these generally cater for 18-30 year olds and are referred to as Omega Leo Clubs.

Leo Clubs are required to have a Leo Club Advisor, a member of the sponsoring Lions Club who attends meetings and provides general advice to the club. Lions International includes more than 144,000 Leo club members in 139 countries.

Campus Lions Clubs

Many Leos join a Campus Lions Club if they attend a university or college after high school graduation. There are more than 125 Campus Lions clubs in the world including nearly 2,500 members on college and university campuses.
