PELAWATTA LIONS NEW YEAR MEGA-MELA
Thrilled by its first years smashing success, the Lions Club of Pelawattaco-hosted the Sinhala – Hindu Aluth Avurudu Mega-Mela at the Bankhill Sport Premises, Rathnayake Mawatha, Pelawatta, Battaramulla. The event spred over three days from 8th April to 10th April 2011 was co-partnered by the Bankhill Sports (Pvt) Ltd., Lions Club of Pelawatta and the Leo Club of Pelawatta, The Fair featured trade stalls operated by reputed establishments, a Mini Carnival, Musical Shows, Traditional Games and Games of Skill, Food Stalls and daily Fireworks Displays. The selection of the Avurudu Kumari and Avurudu Kumaraya was the major crowd pleasing highlight. The Lions and Lion Ladies of the Pelawatta Lions Club were kept busy by the mammoth tasks of planning, judging of events, distribution of prizes, coordinating with the outside agencies, crowd control and in preparing the venue. The Club contributed Rs. 25,000.00 for the event and in addition contributed labour towards the smooth implementation of the programmes which stretched out from 10.00 am till 11.00 pm each day.
On the 9th April 2011, the District Governor, Lions District 306 C1 Lion Ananda Balasuriya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while The Chief Guest on the 10th was Ms. Indu Rathnayake, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Deputy Chairperson of the SevaVanitha Unit of the Ministry of Defence and the Guest of Honor was Mr. Leslie Rupasinghe, Coordinating Secretary, Ministry of Defence.
More than 15,000 people gathered and had a wonderful experienced while their children participating in various events had a whale of a time. The proceeds of the event will be used to promote sport and sponsor the coaching and training of up and coming young sports stars.
