Lions Clubs International Purpose
- To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.
- To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.
- To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.
- To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.
- To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.
- To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
- To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.
- To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

- To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

LIONISM ENTERS SURINAME
Since the birth of Lionism in 1917 in the United States of North America this organization has its desire and ideal steadily seen come true, namely to spread internationally and reach its objectives through effective implementation and through promoting those.
After over forty years, Lionisme around the world had taken root, the fire jumped over to Suriname and at three Surinamese, namely: Dr. Alfredo Wix, Evie Treurniet and Adolf Brunings. This reulted on May 8, 1957 to the establishment of a Lions Club in Suriname, namely "Lions Club Paramaribo."
Dr. Alfredo Wix studied in Geneva (Switzerland), where he completed the study for dentist in 1930. After being promoted to the Royal University in Bonn (West Germany) he worked in three European cities (London, Vienna, Budapest). He traveled to South America to Guayaquil (Ecuador) also being promoted at the State University there. In the capital of the country, Quito, he also worked as a dentist. Before repatriation to Suriname in 1946 Dr. Wix also chose Chile as a country to exercise his profession. He mastered the Spanish language perfectly. Dr. Wix was the son of the famous Industrial / Entrepreneur Wix in New Nickerie, Suriname.
Of Evie Treurniet we know that he has for some time resided abroad. In the year 1956 he was in Cambridge, USA to study VHF Radio Engineering, where he attended lionsclub meetings invited by friends from different Lions Clubs. In Aruba he, through his contacts, brought a few visits to the meetings of the Aruba Lions Club. When asked then by the acting club president Carlos julao (Aruban) about the existence of a Lions Club in Suriname, the desire came in the mind of Evie to join Suriname also to this major service organization, when he then had to respond negatively. He then got the necessary documentation from said Club President.
It was in 1955 when Adolf Brunings, who also was possessed by the Lion spirit for his rather long stay on the island of Aruba, remigrated to Suriname. In Aruba he met with Joseph D'Aguiar, which originally was also Surinamese, a member of the Lions Club Aruba. Invited by D'Aguiar Evie attended a meeting of the Lions Club. Already after the first visit came the invitation for membership to the Club. After the initiation, however, soon followed the decision to return to Suriname. It was then in1955. Adolf was convinced that Suriname had to join the world organization of Lions in order to make the ideal of "WE SERVE" do come through.
So these three, Alfredo, Evie and Adolf came together to reinforce the good intention of dissemination of the idea of interesting others to Lionism.
The person who had been involved was Dr. R Chin Ten Fung, who was excited by the plan. The office of Chin Ten Fung then served as a meeting place to undertake actions towards the common goal. After the documentation on the purpose of the Lion has been studied and explained they decided to establish the Lions Club.
This was on February 12, 1957. The club obtained the name of "Lions Club Paramaribo" later to be changed to "Lions Club Paramaribo Central" (LC Paramaribo Central).
The official recognition of the Lions Club Paramaribo Central (LC Paramaribo Central) by Lions International was held by the positive advice of Nivaldo Navarro, who on behalf of LCI paid a visit to the Club, namely on May 8, 1957 (date of recognition). At first, the date for the "Charter Night" was decided on May 29, 1957, but for urgent reasons it was shifted to July 27, 1957.
This solemn event took place in one of the premises of the “Buitensocieteit het Park” on the former government square. The request was then made to the American Consul, Mr. J. McKnight, to hand over the Charter to Dr. A. Wix, President of the Club, which happened accordingly.
Mr. J. van Tilburg, Governor of Suriname was present on this particular occasion, while other notables with their ladies gave “acte de presence”.

On December 16, 1957 the Club was officially visited by International President Edward G. Barry accompanied by his wife and the District Governor of District E, Dr. Santos Erminy-Arismendi. On this just one day visit, a special meeting with dinner was held in Buitensociëteit Park.
Attendees were Dr. S. Axwijk (President of the States of Suriname), Mr. F.J.H. Barends (City Commissioner), Dr. J.H.E. Ferrier (Prime Minister), Mr. J. McKnight (Consul of America), Mr. DGA Findlay (Vice Consul of Venezuela), Mr. C. Nagtegaal (Director of the Office of the Governor), Mr. Gleysteen (Vice Consul of America), Mr. A. Clarke (Technical Assistant), Mr. W. Cole (Sur. Bauxite Co.), all with their ladies . The Lions were also present with their "Partners in Service".
On July 22, 1960 Alfonso Denegri arrived in Suriname, as a representative of Lions International in Chicago. The purpose of this visit was to check the possibility of establishing more Lions Clubs in Suriname as well as in Guyana and French Guiana. On the basis of the preparatory work done by the Lions A. Wix, E Treurniet, J. Marion, A. Brunings, CR Singh and W. Salm a second club in Paramaribo, as well as in the districts of Para and Nickerie could be eastablished. This was also a fact for Guyana.
Successively the establishment of Lions Clubs Paranam (later changed to "Para"), North, Georgetown (Guyana) and Nieuw Nickerie took place. By the establishment of "North", "Central" was added to the name of our club. At the founding of the Lions Club Nieuw Nickerie the impulse was given by Dr. Alfredo Wix. He was also the first president of this club.
Approval was then obtained for the establishment of Provisional District P (later transformed into District 60). The language correspondence problem was therefore solved.
Jan Marion was appointed by Lions International as the first District Governor of
District 60.
In the same year the District Governor Marion traveled to Guyana for the establishment of the first Lions Club there, which was given the name of Lions Club of Georgetown. This had begun to spread its wings to other countries and in 1961 the first Lions Club was founded in Barbados, followed by Trinidad and Tobago in 1962. Since then, both at home and abroad Lions Clubs were sponsored by the existing clubs. In Suriname clubs were successively established as below:

Following the amendment of the Constitution of Lions Clubs International in 1987, whereby also women can be Lions the former Lioness Clubs respectively Lions Clubs Ready Paramaribo and Paramaribo Felice were chartered.
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
