Over the past period, an extensive eye examination has been performed on approximately 70 students at Vision Care by Varida N.V., with the permission of their parents and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. These students are from Moriaschool, L.D. Akselschool, OS Flora 1, OS Flora 2 and OS Accaribo.More than half of the students turned out to actually need glasses. Students with other eye problems are referred to the ophthalmologist. On Monday, July 4, the students of 4 schools could receive their glasses. The moment that we have waited for and worked diligently towards has been reached on Friday, June 17, 2022. On this day, after the first stone was laid on November 5, 2021, the Lions project for the construction of a Practice Building for Vocational Education in the Youth Correction Center at Santo Boma was handed over to the Ministry of Justice and Police. For the young detainees in the Youth Correction Center this means that from this date on they have a practice building within the Youth Correction Center to participate in vocational education. Hereby laying a good foundation so that they can make a successful return into society.The transfer took place through the signing of the transfer protocol between Justice and Police Minister Kenneth Amoksi and Lions District Governor 60A Jerry Hoffman. A maintenance contract has also been signed by the Director of Operational Services of the Ministry of Justice and Police Patrick Campagne and the committee chairperson of the five cooperating Lions clubs Rudolph Augustin. With the unveiling of the plaque by the Minister of Justice and Police and the Lions District Governor, the opening of the building was a fact.This project was carried out by the five collaborating Lions clubs Paramaribo East, Paramaribo West, Paramaribo North, Kwatta and Para and was made possible through a grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation for an amount of USD 68,464.=. Today marks a big achievement for the Embassy of Japan for Suriname, Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) and Lions Club Paramaribo West (LCPW) as the grant contract for an amount of USD 255.923 was signed for the project ' Project for improving childhood cancer (oncology) patients treatment system in Suriname'. LCPW initiated this project in 2019 in close collaboration with AZP and in 2021 the official project proposal was submitted to the Embassy of Japan. On sunday 23 januari 2022, Lions Club Paramaribo West donated adult diapers to 52 year old Mr. Arnold Troenokarijo, who suffers from a rare disease called neurofibromatosis, which manifests itself in lumps all over his body. Due to it, he has become bed ridden and suffers from a spinal cord injury. Seeing that he can’t move at all, he now has to use diapers.Mr. Arnold was very suprised and happy with the donation. He appreciated the kind gesture.Though this disease is not contagious, mr. On November 5, 2021, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the construction of a vocational school in the Youth Correction Center (JCC) for juvenile detainees in Santo Boma. The people present where the Lions District Governor, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Police, the District Commissioner for Wanica North-West Suraksha Sital-Hirasingh and the representatives of the 5 collaborating Paramaribo East, Paramaribo North, Paramaribo West, Kwatta and Para. The different sponsors of the project were also present.After short speeches by Miss G. Acton from the Ministry of Justice and Police, Lions JCC Project Chair R. Augustin, Lions District Governor J. The Ministry of Justice and Police and five collaborating Lions Clubs in Suriname have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the construction of a practice building for the Youth Correction Center (JCC) at Santo Boma. The Ministry of Justice and Police was hereby represented by its Minister Mr. Kenneth Amoksi. The representatives of the five collaborating Lions Clubs were District Governor – District 60A Jerry Hoffman and Executive Committee Chairman Rudolph Augustin MSc. In addition to this MOU, an Implementation Agreement will also be signed with the Director of Operational Services. The JCC project is also supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The signing took place at the Congreshal on Thursday 26th August 2021.The Ministry of Justice and Police has been setting up a correction center for convicted juveniles for years. The building complex that has been partially erected needs a thorough renovation and has a reception capacity for 96 children in the age category 12 to 18 years. Currently 35 young people are being educated.The aim of this cooperation is to achieve a vocational and market-oriented education program in which sufficient attention is given to developing practical skills and to laying a good foundation for these young people so that they can make a successful return to society after leaving the correction center. The construction of this practice building will have an impact not only on the lives of the young detainees, but also on the community. This will include the prevention of recidivism, the reduction of juvenile delinquency and the promotion of social participation.In 2019, this project was resumed by the Ministry of Justice and Police. For the time being, only the classrooms for regular education (theory), sports and the library are operational.This project came to the attention of the Lions Clubs in Suriname in 2018. After a presentation by Georgetine Acton, Project Coordinator, the five collaborating Lions clubs Paramaribo East, Paramaribo West,Paramaribo North, Kwatta and Para have unanimously decided to support this great project and to enter into a partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Police.The total construction costs for the practice building have been estimated at US$ 97,027.69. The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has issued a Grant of US$68,464.00 upon application by the five collaborating Lions Clubs. The remaining amount is further financed by the five cooperating Lions Clubs. Construction will start at the end of September 2021. This project started on August 25th and at the end these children will receive the glasses completely free of charge.The spectacle frames have already been sponsored by the Zienderogen foundation in the Netherlands and have already arrived in Suriname.Focusslijperij N.V. takes care of the glasses.Currently children of OS Drambrandersgracht and OS Blijdschool with visual complaints have been selected by the teachers and have visited Vision Care by Varida N.V. The clubs are audited annually by the District Governor. Even this fiscal year, despite the measures surrounding the worldwide covid-19 pandemic, this club audit has taken place. Bij de 2e donatie hebben wij een speciaal op maat gemaakt bed frame met matras voor een van haar bewoners die bedlegerig is. On Wednesday, November 4, 2020 we made two donations to Verpleeghuis Evie in district Commewijne. The first consist of disposable face masks and hand sanitizers which was made possible on behalf of Parliament member Chuanrui Wang. And second, a specially made-to-measure bed frame with mattress for one of its residents who is bedridden.#WeServe
Today, October 31th 2020, we had the third edition of our annual Cook out and we successfully completed this fundraising project. The 500 meals are prepared, made, packed and sold with the support of our members' partners, family, friends, neighbors. Naturally, our members have also contributed. Thanks to the committee of this project.Simultaneous we carried out a fundspending project by donating 100 meals to three children's homes. Voor een ieder van de club was deze installatie een nieuwe ervaring, gezien de maatregelen ter preventie van covid19. Wij zijn er uiteindelijk toch nog in geslaagd om volgens de tradities van het lionisme deze handeling doorgang te laten vinden.#WeServe
Vandaag, zondag 28 juni 2020 heeft Lions Club Paramaribo West haar laatste activiteit voor dit fiscal year 2019/2020 uitgevoerd.In het kader van het wereldwijde Lions “ Fight the hunger’ programma heeft Lions Club Paramaribo West haar bijdrage geleverd door ongeveer 20 gezinnen te voorzien van voedselpakketten. Gezien de huidige omstandigheden rondom de preventie van Covid-19, konden er maar maximaal 5 personen deelnemen aan deze activiteit vanuit onze club.Om het jaar toch goed af te sluiten met de geringe bewegingsruimte hebben we vandaag gemeend deze donatie te doen. We zijn onze sponsors, de trekker van dit project en alle sympathisanten erg dankbaar dat wij mede door hun inzet dit project succes hebben kunnen afronden. Zelfs de hevige regenbuien van hedenochtend hebben ons niet weerhouden om dit project vandaag toch nog uit te voeren.#WeServe
