FOOD PACKING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Since the enactment of the “National School Lunch Act” of 1946, school districts around the country have provided low cost or free lunches for qualified needy children.  Most of us take it for granted that school children always have nourishment they require and those that don’t are helped by this program.

Through a grant from the Blue Ridge Food Bank in the Charlottesville, VA area, the Fluvanna Elementary Schools have been able to provide food for the weekends to qualified students.  When the program began in 2006, approximately 60 backpacks with food were taken home for the weekend with the expectation that empty back packs would be returned to be refilled the following week.  As of May 2011, the number is closer to 250 each week!  Join Rivanna Lions and friends every Thursday that school is in session to "pack food"

OLD FARM DAY - First Sat in May

The Rivanna Lions offers FREE sight and hearing screening on at the Fluvanna County “Old Farm Day” held at Pleasant Grove on the first Saturday in October.  Run by the Fluvanna Historical Society, it features exhibits and demonstrations reminiscent of the old farm lifestyle.  Community groups and vendors are also present.  The event attracts approximately 6,000 visitors each year.

Rivanna Lion members have been trained to screen both adults and Children.  Using the SPOT Vision Screener, anyone from 6months of age up can be screened for vision abnormalities. Children 16 and under must have parental approval (signature on registration form).  Certified Technicians from the club will also be on board to evaluate the findings of the screenings and report the results.  Recommendations to consult a professional will be made where necessary.

Screenings are done on a specially equipped air-conditioned / heated mobile unit containing 2 hearing booths, 2 sight machines and a glaucoma machine (adults only).  The entire process, from completing a short form thru screenings and evaluation takes about 15 minutes.  No appointments are necessary.

EYE GLASS RECYCLING

You have no doubt seen the collection boxes around your community – used glasses are collected and shipped to the Recycling Center in Roanoke.  There they are cleaned, sorted by prescription, packed and shipped to be used in third world countries and well as some unserved areas in the United States.  Our club collects and ships well over 1,000 pairs of glasses each year to the Center.
