Lions Family Tree
The Lions Club has its orgins in Chicago USA in 1917, when business man Melvyn Jones encouraged other like minded individuals to help those less fortunate than themselves, it has grown to become an international organisation with a presence in over 200 Countries and over 1.35 million members worldwide. However it was not until 1950 that Lions were established in the UK and the first club appeared in London.
As an organisation, the Lions Club helped draft the United Nations Charter in 1945, whilst 1968 was the year when Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) was formed and since then it has supported individuals and nations in trouble across the globe.
Fight Against Blindness
One of the most important focus of Lions Clubs International is for its work in helping to prevent blindness, this stems from the challenge laid down by Helen Keller in 1925 for Lions Clubs to become -
'Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness'.
In 1990 'Sight First' was launched and to date has raised £213 million to help prevent blindness...the crusade continues!
One of Lions Clubs Signature Projects is The Lions Health Programme (LEHP) providing warnings and messages concerning all types of eye health issues through pamphlets and posters. To find out more view www.lionsmd105.org
