Philippine Heritage Celebration

We celebrate Philippine Heritage with presentations about Lions, a food decoration demonstration, entertainment and dancing. This is a good time for all who attend and educational for those not familiar with the warm and fun-loving Filipino culture.

Seamen's Christmas Party

The club hosts an annual Seamen's Christmas Party, along  with the Stella Maris Maritime Center, at the Global Maritime Ministries on Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans. This is always a special night for the seamen who spend most of their year at sea, having little contact with home or friends.  Christmas carols, Christmas games and even some Christmas presents.

Mardi Gras Party

The club hosts an annual Mardi Gras Ball, which has become a New Orleans tradition, as much a part of the season as the numerous parades. This is our version, complete with dinner, dancing and lots of fun. Our Mardi Gras king and queen are selected at the ball by lottery, so the result is always a surprise to all! What a blast!

Lions Mission to Thailand

Our club sponsors a mission of vision to remote areas in Thailand. We have donated over 1100 pairs of recycled glasses to villagers who never had this opportunity before. Read the reports from
2008 and 2009 to see the results for yourself. This is what Lionism is all about!   We have made successful Vision Missions to Lumphon, Dokkhamthai and Chiang Kham, Thailand.  We are also shipping glasses to Pang Ma Pha Hospital, a clinic on the border of Burma and delivered needed wheelchair parts and a self-propelled cartt to a Thai man paralyzed in a shooting here in New Orleans. You can see some pictures of one of the missions here.

Project Hope

This project started when a couple active members retired to the Philippines. They found that schools over there were sadly lacking in library books, texts and supplies. Project Hope was born to meet that need. Our members seek out old text books deemed surplus by a New Orleans school, sort through boxes of books and fil boxes for shipment. In addition to books, the boxes contain school supplies (notebooks, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, rulers). So far, we have served Pook Elementary School in Balayan, Batangas and Pongpong Elementary School in Santo Tomas, La Union in the Philippines. We were helped by a donation from the Bayou Blue Coteau Lions Club toward the shipping costs. We hope to make to a number of schools in various parts of the Philippines.  Recently, the project expanded to include a donation to Pasay City Lions and their dental clinic for indigents.

Asian Heritage Festival

The New Orleans Filipino American Lions Club participates in the Asian Heritage Festival in Audubon Zoo every year. We provide a food booth, serving Filipino delicacies and drinks. This festival is hosted by the Asian Pacific American Society of New Orleans annually and is an opportunity to experience the music, dance, crafts and foods of the whole Southeast Asian community.

Glaucoma Screening/Health Screening

Our club proudly participates in the discrict glaucoma screening program.  This year, we sponsored a screening in the Versailles area New Orleans East in conjunction with the Vietnamese Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans (VAYLA- NO). We also have conducted blood pressure and diabetes screenings at our own functions and as gusts at the events of other Lions Clubs.

Fall Picnic

Good family fun and service work too!  We gather at Lafreniere park for simple fun and fellowship, but we also offer important health screenings for anyone who attends.  Filipino food and a blood pressure test? Who can pass that up!  It is open to everyone, so look for this party on our Event Calendar

Children's Camp

Our club is an enthusiastic participant in the Louisiana Lions Children's Camp in Leesville, LA.  Every year our members chaperone children in buses to a week of fun and frolic at the campo.  Week one is for mentally challenged children and week two is for physically challenged kids.  Nothing feels better than our work with these wonderful kids.

Immigration Seminar

Partnering with the USCIS, our club proivides an immigration seminar for those wishing to learn more about how the US imigration system works, and actually meet some of the people who work for the USCIS.
