Club Projects
New London, CT - November 29, 2012
Members of The New London Connecticut Lions Club, through a grant received from Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF)'s Emergency Relief Fund delivered over $2,500 worth of food to The Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center on Friday, November 30th to replenish items that were distributed to the Greater New London Community as a result of the disastrous weather effects of "SuperStorm Sandy".
Lion District 23C Governor Jan Miller, a member of The Groton Lions Club, recently applied for and received a $10,000 Lions International Emergency Disaster Assistance Grant to provide relief to shoreline victims of the recent storm. Grants were made to a number of Lions Clubs in the District, which covers 55 clubs in Eastern Connecticut.According to New London Lion volunteer Dave Moorehead, ShopRite of New London, owned by the community-spirited Capano family, has "worked hand-in-hand with our club to make sure that the available dollars were stretched to the max", increasing the amount of high priority food needed for distribution. Also helping coordinate the project was Kelly Horton, Vice President of The Food Center.
The Food Center, which distributes food to soup kitchens and food pantries throughout the region, targeted the food donated by the Lions Club to people who had suffered great loss & were in need of food assistance in the immediate area. Through this project, The Food Center received a large amount emergency relief food supplies, including cases of eggs, canned tuna fish, canned soup, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese and fresh ground beef, according to Lion Moorehead.
Lion Miller reported that all of the grant monies have been now been fully distributed by Lions Clubs to those in desperate need. He commended the New London Connecticut Lions Club for spearheading the efforts to replenish storm related distributions of food through The Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center. It was particularly heartwarming to coordinate the delivery so that Gemma, herself, was present to receive the Lions donations and thank The New London Connecticut Lions & District Governor Miller for their humanitarian project.
