In Memoriam

LOCKE, Ronald William
Passed away on August 23rd, 2019 at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Life member of Newcastle Lions Club and a long-time member of the Newcastle Historical Society. Survived by his wife Betty Lou Locke. Father of Bill Locke, Rhonda Lynn Osmond (Steve) and Michael Locke (Harry). Grandfather of Amanda Osmond, Lynn Osmond (Adam) and Erin Hains. Great Grandfather of 6. Ron will also be missed by many other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at ST. GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 250 Mill St S, Newcastle, on Saturday, September 28th, 2019 at 2 pm with a visitation starting at the church at 1 pm. Donations may be made to Sick Kids Hospital in Ron’s memory.

 

WILLIS, Kenneth Brian
He passed away peacefully with his family at his side, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Saturday, June 1st, 2019 at the age of 73. Beloved husband of Maureen for 37 years. Loving father of Jeff (Christina), Shannon (Dan), Christine, Karen (Samm) and the late Jenny. Cherished grandpa of Kayla, Kyle, Maya, Gabriel, Jackson, Hailey, Nicholas, Bobby-Jo and Scott. Dear brother of Susan (Doug) and predeceased by his parents Gordon and Phyllis. Fondly remembered by his extended family and friends.

Ken was well known to the community of Newcastle and found great joy in lending a helping hand. He was an active volunteer with the Newcastle Lions, Terry Fox Run, Walk for Dog Guides, Newcastle Bond Head Ratepayers Association, and many other community groups. Ken loved keeping active and social with his various sports leagues, including baseball, pickleball and bowling. His friendships through these activities will be forever cherished.

Ken lived in Pickering prior to moving to Newcastle in 2004. Ken’s career was in the financial sector and he retired as an Assistant Vice-President at the Canadian Depository for Securities (CDS) after nearly three decades with the organization. His business and financial acumen helped guide many of his family, friends and organizations that he was involved in.

At the family’s request, a private service will take place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Newcastle Community Town Hall, 20 King Ave West, on Saturday, July 6th, 2019 from 1-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations made to The Terry Fox Foundation would be greatly appreciated: www.terryfox.org.

Passed away peacefully at Fosterbrooke Long Term Care Facility on Friday, October 6th, 2017 at the age of 77. Beloved husband of Connie for 57 years. Loving father of Sharon (Steve), Neil (Dyan) and the late Kenneth (Andrea). Cherished papa of Cameron, Erika, Owen, Jarrod (April), Jacob, Kurtis and great papa of Skyler. Peter will be fondly remembered by all of his extended family and many friends. Special thank you to all of the staff at Fosterbrooke Long Term Care Facility for all of their care and compassion. MARTIN, ALEC GORDON – Long-time member of the Lions Club of Newcastle. Retired 41-year employee of General Motors. Passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Saturday, October 8, 2016, at the age of 84 years. Alec, beloved husband of Marilyn Martin. Loving father of Tom, Don (Irene) and Greg (Lynda). Dear grandfather of Kevin (Sarah), Rachel (Joel), Richard, Ian, Michael, Shawn, Emily, Joshua and Noah. Loved great-grandpa of Poppy, Aiden, Judah and Levi. Dear brother of Joyce, Doris and the late Lloyd. A Celebration of Life will be held at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill Street S., Newcastle on Sunday, October 16, 2016, from 2 – 5 p.m. Donations to the Lions Club of Newcastle or the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation in Alec’s memory would be gratefully appreciated. 

 

Hopkins, Roy James “Hoppy” – It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Roy on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the age of 82.
Roy was born in Waupoos (Prince Edward County) and has been a resident of Newcastle for the past 51 years. Retired PPG/Duplate employee for 40+ years. Roy was a dedicated community leader; 39 years in the Newcastle Lions Club, Scout Leader, and volunteer in many various community associations. Roy’s passions were fishing, gardening, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.
Roy was the beloved husband of Elma (nee Allison) for 59 years. Devoted father of Dan (Donna), Brad (Tracy) and Jenny (Gary Powell). Dear brother of Gladys Clarkson and Phyllis Martin; predeceased by George Hopkins, Iris Robinson, Mary Kemsley and Nellie Brough. Pa will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Phil Hopkins (Christina Colacicco), Sarah and Dylan Powell and Clare Hopkins. Fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.
An evening visitation will be held at NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill Street South, Newcastle, on Monday, April 4, 2016, from 7 to 9 pm. A Lions service will commence at 6:30 pm. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at 11 am with visitation an hour prior. 

Paterson, R. Murray - July 27, 1928 – October 22, 2015. (long-time member of Newcastle United Church, and former co-owner of Toms & Sons LTD, and Toms IGA for 37 years)
Passed away peacefully on October 22, 2015 in his 88th year at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Murray, beloved husband for 63 years of Marjorie Frances (nee Toms). Cherished father of Mary Grace and her husband David Milton of Brooklin and Ruth Marjorie and her husband Nico de Jonge of Whitby. Devoted grandfather of Ian Milton (Tanya), Sarah (Kyle Jordan), Lesle (Corey Klender), Jennifer (Jeffrey Hawn), and Megan (Adam Smith). Devoted great grandfather to 11 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his brothers James(1994), Donald(1932), Harry (1978), Alan (1995) and his sister Kathleen (1999). Brother-in-law of Mary Grace Wallace and her late husband Tom and Jean Ellen Wagar and her late husband Bud. Murray was an active supporter of his community, serving on local council, the school board, the hospital board, and the Clarington Food Bank. He was a life member and Past President(1964) of the Newcastle Lions Club and a Melvin Jones recipient; founding president of the Newcastle BIA and a founding director with Newcastle Bond Head Ratepayers’ Association. In 2003 he was the unanimous choice of Council for the Senior of the Year Award.


Langley, Joseph "Amos"Member of Newcastle Lions Club. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 21, 2015, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Loving husband of Doreen McNevin. Caring father of Christina Hall (Wilfred), Jeff (Darlene), Donny (Kathy), Sandra Birkinshaw, Donna Thertell (Terry) and Anita Berrea (Larry). Will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survived by his brother Dawson Langlais and predeceased by 10 siblings. A visitation will be held at NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St S, Newcastle, on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A Lions Club service will take place on Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the funeral home.


RICKARD, David Moffat - Passed away suddenly in Haliburton on November 7, 2014 at the age of 75. Life time member of Newcastle United Church, retired supervisor of General Motors, member of Newcastle Lion's Club, member of Durham Lodge #66 A.F.A.M. and member of Newcastle Rate Payers Association. Loving husband of Pearl Rickard for 51 years. Devoted father of Jeff Rickard (Crystal McLachlin) and Janice Scheffee (Greg). Adoring grandfather of Morgan, Nathan, Joshua and Matthew. Step grandfather of Kade and Braeden. Dave will also be missed by his nieces, nephews, relatives.

 


MAJER, EDMUND RICHARD – Peacefully at his residence in Newcastle on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the age of 87 years. Ed was a Provost Marshall, British 11 Squadron and veteran of World War II, life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178, Past President and life member of the Newcastle Lions Club with 50 years of committee service, Past Lions Zone Chairman and a proud recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. Ed is survived by his cherished wife Mona, and his loved children Gary Majer and his wife Andrea, Caroline and her husband Chris Tompkins and Marysia and her Partner George. Loving grandfather of Kim, Kate, Jill, Joanna, Shaun, Kristin and Davis. Loving great-grandfather of Jack, Grace and 1 expected great grandchild in March. interment of cremated remains in St. George’s Cemetery. 


JILKS, Gordon Fredrick – at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Saturday, July 2, 2011, in his 78th year. Gord, beloved husband of the late Colleen (nee Moberly). Dear father of Norman Willman of Oshawa and Ronald Willman and his wife Christine of St. Thomas Poppa to Krista-Lee, Matthew, Christopher and Nicholas. Father of Glenna Weller, Neil Jilks, and Gordon “Andy” Jilks. Brother-in-law of Isobel of Scotland and the late June Seely. Missed by many nieces and nephews, friends at St. George’s Anglican Church and the Newcastle Lions Club, and his special four-legged companion Becky.


RICKARD, Roy Brenton “R.B.” – (Councillor, Village of Newcastle, for 12 years; Veteran of WW11; former owner of Newcastle Plumbing & Heating; member of Newcastle Lions for 61 years and past District Governor of A3 1961 and 1962; member of Newcastle Village and District Historical Society and Newcastle Horticultural Society; former BIA and Chamber of Commerce member and Hall Board Chairman; life-time member of Newcastle United Church) passed away peacefully at his home in Newcastle on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, in his 90th year.

Dear husband for 64 years of Jean (nee Bonathan). Sadly missed by children George (Lana) of Newcastle, Beverly Elaschuk (Kenneth) of Port Carling, Janice Mills (David) of St. Albert, Alberta, Douglas (Robin), and Robin (Wendy) of Newcastle. Predeceased by his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Stanley (Muriel), Marion Farr (survived by Fred), Garnet (Annabelle), and Helen Buxton (Ted). Grandpa to Elan (Don) Boyd and Michael (Tania) Rickard, Darrin and Daniel Elaschuk, Jeffrey and Laura Mills, Keegan, Joel and Brynn Rickard, Rudy and Whitney Rickard, and great-grandchildren Ryan and Matthew Boyd and Quinn Rickard.

POWELL, Stanley Eric Thomas (Stan) - (Former President and Life Member of the Newcastle Lions’ Club since 1968; member of Newcastle United Church; former employee of J. Anderson Smith & Co., the C.P.R., and a custodian from 1952 to 1987 at Newcastle United Church, Newcastle Community Hall, Clarke High School, and O.P.P. Station.) – after a brief illness, surrounded by his family at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Saturday, September 19, 2009, in his 81st year. Stan, beloved husband for 61 years of Kathleen “Kay” (nee Toms). Loving father of Elizabeth and her husband Wayne Markle of Scarborough, Judy Powell and her partner Lynn Piggott of Oshawa, Dale and her husband Wayne Hunt of Pontypool, and the late Harold.


JOSE, Francis, husband and soul-mate of Erla (Chapman) for 51 years. Father of Faye, Gordon (Kimberly) and Murray (Mark). Grandfather of Cassandra and Deigan. Brother of Donald (Marion) and Doug (Doreen), and brother-in-law of Clair Chapman (Penny). A graduate of Kemptville Agricultural College, Francis was a Master Breeder with the Holstein Association of Canada, first Chairman of the Durham County Milk Committee, 50-year volunteer with the Durham Agricultural Society, 4-H Leader, and a director of the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. A lifetime and involved member of Newcastle United Church and active member of Oshawa Presbytery. Founding director and recognized member of Camp Quin-Mo-Lac. Long-time member of the Newcastle Lions Club, Newcastle Historical Society, the Toronto Cornish Association, and a director on the Parkview Seniors’ Residence Board. Francis supported his community for his entire life, and many were enriched by his quiet leadership. 


 BLAKER Pat, loving husband for 65 years of the late Elizabeth (Betty) Blaker. Devoted father of Judith Elizabeth Bateman and her husband Ken Mitchell of Spruce Grove, Alberta; David Patrick Blaker and his wife Lenora of Ottawa; Catherine Louise Blaker of Spruce Grove, Alberta; Timothy William Blaker and his wife Sandra of London, and Gordon Douglas Blaker and his wife Muriel of Newcastle. Sadly missed by eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. RT.D. after 18 years in the Service; 39-year member of the Newcastle Lions Club; past District Deputy Governor, of District A-3; retired 17-year teacher for the Newcastle Northumberland School Board.


HOAR, Frank former owner/operator of Newcastle Garage for 43 years; lifelong member of Newcastle United Church; 51-year member and Past President of the Newcastle Lions Club, Melvin Jones Fellow; 50 year member of Durham Masonic Lodge #66 A.F.& A.M.; Newcastle Councillor for 13 years; Past President of the Parkview Board of Directors and Past Secretary of the Newcastle Ratepayers’ Association. Loving and devoted husband for 58 years of Eva (nee Burton) of Newcastle. Dear father of Frances and her husband Colin Cook of Brampton, Heather Griffin of Bowmanville, and John Hoar of Toronto. Proud grandfather of Brian, Daniel, Brett, and Jason. Brother of Harold and his wife Eleanor of Oakville and the late George Edward (Ted) of Ottawa, and survived by sister-in-law Lenore of Ottawa
