Meetings

9th December, 2020  Well, what a different year this one has been! We are so lucky to live in beautiful New Zealand, surrounded by our big moat, which enables us to control our borders. Our great nationwide lockdown from 22nd March to the end of April and then at lower levels until the end of May, certainly put a halt on the terrible COVID-19 virus, but also put a halt on our fund-raising.

However, since then we have been busy with candy floss sales, sausage sizzles, Christmas cake and pickled onions sales, and maintaining our beautiful Centennial Project Woodland Park.

Donations have been made to the new Wellington Children's Hospital Lions Playscape; Christchurch Cancer Shuttle Bus; "Spirit of NZ" sailing - "The Inspiration Voyage" for young people with physical disabilities; Life Education Trust; and the Nelson/Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, among others.

30th June 2020  Among other activities, our major projects this last 2019/20 year have been:

Candy Floss sales at school galas. Our candy floss machine works overtime to supply the seemingly never-ending queue of eager children lining up. Fortunately, we are able to reassure concerned parents that there is actually a minimal amount of sugar in the candy floss … far less than 1 teaspoonful in each serving!! Always lovely to serve lots of happy, smiling & polite children.

Christmas Cake Sales – we made a concerted effort this year, coming in 3rd for the whole of NZ, with sales of just over 300.

Our annual Charity Golf Tournament, as always, was a great success with lots of fun being had by all the participants and great rivalry between the various competing company teams. The weather gods smiled upon us as it rained heavily all night and the sun eventually came out just as the first teams were teeing off. The $5000.00 proceeds from this event went to help fund the Diabetes Youth Camp held here in Nelson, which was very much appreciated.

Woodlands Park – as our Centennial Project, our Club was allocated a plot of land by the Nelson City Council on which we are planting a beautiful woodland incorporating a walking track. To date 220 trees have been planted by our Club and we have a further 60 trees to plant, but at present …. plans have been stalled by an invasion of feral pigs, which are rooting up the surrounding area! The wording on the surrounding fence reads - “The meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you never expect to sit”.

Our main donations this year have been made to the  Christchurch Cancer Shuttle Bus, Camp Quality, Breast Cancer Foundation, Karori Lions Spirit of NZ Trust, Prostate Foundation, NZ Burns Foundation, Life Education Trust, Child Mobility Hart Walker, purchase of an AED for the Nelson Pistol Club, which is situated in rather a remote location with signs on the highway to indicate that it is there, Nelson Food Bank, plus more.
