Brief Mounds Lions Club History
The Mounds Lions Club was organized and held events as far back as the 1940’s. However, they were not chartered until November 2, 1959. The meetings were held monthly in the basement of the United Methodist Church on Highway 51 in Mounds, Illinois, later named Blanche Street.
Two of the charter members were Harold Gage and Eddie Austin. Other members that came in were Dallas Jackson, Charles Anderson, Paul Pitman and Ronnie Diggs. The club was all male and no females were allowed until 2003 when Jani Robinson (who later became the first female District Governor of 1CS from 2008-2009) was allowed to join. The club never lost its charter and had a membership at one time of 35. Harold and Eddie were really the backbone and kept the club in good standing. All membership and international dues were paid on time.
Fundraisers were yearly road blocks for the Telethon of Stars and the club sold candy to help with community projects along with purchasing eye glasses and hearing aids for children and adults with disabilities.
All founding members have passed away. The oldest member for our club is Lion Ronnie Diggs. The club has 16 members and meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Public Library located at 418 First Street, Mounds, Illinois. The President is Lion Retha Eurales, Vice-President is Lion Sarah Gatewood, Secretary is Lion Florence Heady, Treasurer is Lion Josie Eason, Membership Chairperson is Lion Fern Edwards, PDG, First Black District Governor of 1CS from 2016-2017, Past Club President, Club Membership Chair, LCIF Coordinator, Zone Chair and currently (2020) District Governor of ICS is Lion Derek Eurales.
The club is very involved in community projects, the Telethon of Stars, Candy Day and other fundraisers to help purchasing eye glasses and hearing aids for the disabled.
Where there is a need, there is a Lion.
Our Motto is “We Serve."
