UPDATE:   2024-05-01   MAPLEFEST: Wow, what a great event. Thank-you to all who spent a year planning, those who showed up Friday to move tables, take down a stage, lay out the Crafters areas and help them move in, as well as other general set up. Thank-you Lion Bob for donating a freezer used during the week as well as transporting it with our ice cream freezer and grill to the Simek center. Thanks to those who put in as much as 11 hours on Saturday with so many tasks. All of the Crafter spots were sold out with a few no-shows. There was a great crowd for breakfast, the float/sundae stand needed to make an ice cream run, 56 maple syrup samples for  judging, 27 bikes given away, a great wagon parade with fantastic entries and 61 vision screenings performed in just the first 90 minute session with 3 referrals for a professional eye exam. A complete report may take a while but a huge pat on the back for all who stepped up and made this a HUGE success.

Deer Hide Collection: Bow season begins in 2 weeks so this month’s long project will be starting soon! Collecting & freezing hides in a timely matter is crucial early on. Collecting, trimming and salting is nearly a daily event November – December. All help is encouraged.   This project begins with storing hides in freezers and ends months later with salted hides stacked outside in freezing weather (hopefully). All help is welcome.

UPDATE:   DEER HIDES  are coming in and there is a need for another chest freezer for storage until the weather gets cold enough to salt and leave outside. Any help processing the hides is welcome. Contact Lion Dave with leads on a freezer or if you can help.

UPDATE:  Deer Hide Collection is nearly done. A large portion of the hides have already been picked up. Thanks to all who showed up to watch Lion Jim drive the forklift.

Help can still be used thru the end of Archery season (Jan 7).

UPDATE:   DEER HIDES Collections have wrapped and the last hides were awaiting pick up on 24. We should have a final report at our next meeting.

DIAL SANTA; Tuesday Dec 12 from 5 to 8 PM at Nicolet Bank. Lion Len with have elf hats and nourishment while we listen to children’s wish lists. These may be some of the best phone conversations of the year for those who can come and help. If you do not leave this event smiling, you may be the Grinch.

CHRISTMAS RIVERWALK DISPLAYOur inflated reindeer & Santa along with the Lion are lit up along the Riverwalk. Thank-you Lion Sue B for your perseverance and patience in procuring a spot, our set up crew and Lion Dennis for locating a lighting timer. Check it out!!!!

FOOD IN A BACKPACK 32 Families & over 100 children were provided a Thanksgiving Dinner due to our donation partnered with the Knights of Columbus & Cherrybrook Orchard.

HARVEST DAYS PARADE Thanks to Lion Bill for being the Lion, Lion Jim for driving, Lion Rick for filling candy buckets and quality control, sampling the candy to make sure it was fit to hand out. Lions Len, Mark, Mary & Steve walked and handed out the goods. Lions Dave, Shirley and Sue B. helped decorate. It was fun to see kids so distracted by “the Lion” that they didn’t notice us tossing them candy!

RODEO PARKING: Thanks to the 6 Lions and Mark Liske for helping with parking Sept 22 & 23. I received a generous donation from Rice Bull Riding Company for $1000.00 Saturday evening for our help at both the June & Sept events.

Roadside Clean Up: Wed Sept 27. Beginning at the intersection of HWY 64 & Wren drive at 5PM.

Update;  Hopefully all went well on Sept. 27 with a good turnout. I picked trash at a rest stop in North Dakota in moral support.

Zone Meeting Sept 11 Whittlesey Lions Park: Potluck begins at 5:30. Whittlesey Lions are providing a Fish Boil so we need RSVPs. If you did not commit at our last meeting, call me.  Lion Bill has secured Liz Fryseth and Leader Dog Sunny to speak about how Sunny has made a difference in her life.  Following that will be a brief Maple Fest meeting. A great opportunity to interact with Lions from other clubs!             UPDATE;  Medford had a great showing on Sept 11 at the Whittlesey Ball Park despite the rain. LION Liz Fryseth gave a great presentation on her journey and how Lions helped her after losing her vision. She also shared how she is advocating for other visually impaired; from bus route information to advising emergency services how to better to deal with their unique challenges. Thanks Lion Bill for arranging to get Liz to our area!

Ice Age Days Parade: For once we were not sweltering, especially Lion Bill who wore the Lion costume! Thanks to Lions Dave, Shirley, and Sue B. who helped with decorations, as well as Lion Mary & Vic who also walked and passed out frozen treats.

MEDFORD LIONS DONATION;       Our Donation of $2000, using funding from the Helen Hessing Lindsay Foundation Grant, will be presented to Director Maxx Handel at the Francis L. Simek Memorial Library Medford on Friday, August 18 , 2023, at 10:00 AM.  The donation will be used for large computer screens (24-inch) and Read-A-Long Books.  Medford Lions are invited to participate in the presentation/photo-op.   Thanks, Lion Shirley

Taylor County Fair;  July 27-30, 2023 Lion Mary has signed us up for a booth at the Fair. Perhaps demonstrating some our equipment on attendees is a way to raise awareness of Lions.

update:     We have been approved for a booth and hope to have a reading machine and Spot Check vision screener to help raise awareness of Lionism. Help will be needed to staff the booth Thurs thru Sat.

DUCK RACE: July 30th the ducks swim again!! Lion Sue has ordered tickets so we can sell temporary ownership of world class racing ducks to any member of the public interested. Unfortunately, we CAN NOT release them for personalized training.

update:           Sell, Sell, Sell! Lion Sue has shifts available to sell tickets at County Market, but I’m sure relatives, friends, co-workers, and neighbors are all potential winners if they buy a duck.    Help will be needed on July 29 , 1 PM, to “pull” ducks and July 30 to set up the “course”. It looks to be more of a float party than a race unless we get more rain.

update:        A HUGE thank-you to Lion Sue Giese for chairing the event, all who sold tickets personally and at County Market, duck pullers on Saturday, the course set up team (twice), duck herders, catchers at the end of the race and duck sorters Monday evening. Due to very heavy rains days before, we went from a river water level allowing a waddle to a race that saw the winner in only 8 minutes from the start. The high water did present challenges for course set up individuals. Winners and updates to follow next month.

update:       The great Rubber Duck Race was very successful and timely rains made it a quick one. We made $5294.96 this year. Thank you Lion Sue G. and all ticket sellers, course crew, duck chasers, catchers and sorters. It was a great team effort. The winners:
$1000 Diana Ertl Westboro
$500 Jack Liske Stanley
$200 Sandy Bant Medford
$100 Tim Lemke Medford Tim donated his prize back to the Lions
$100 Sam Schiszik Fall Creek

4TH of JULY:   Food Stand will be help on July 3, 4-9PM, and Juy 4, 11AM-4PM.    Thank you chair Lion Dennis and the well staffed, hard working crew on both days. An update will be available at upcoming meetings.

update:      The weather was not cooperative, nor the scheduling but we managed to raise $829.13 in profits from the 2 day 4th of July event. Thanks Lion Dennis for chairing the event and all workers.

STEAK FEED The weather cooperated and we had a fantastic time in the City Park. PDG Shirley officiated the Officer installation and inducted new member Bob Stolp. Congratulations to Lion Mary on receiving Lion of the Year. Dorothy Falasky, along with her son & daughter in law were our guests. It was good to share memories from both sides.

RODEO PARKING From the reports, there were entertaining times while the many Lions who helped were out working and being visible in our community. Thanks to all!!!

CLEAN SWEEP Thanks to Lions Dave, Jim, Mary, Rick, Steve, and Vic for helping again in the electronics part of the clean sweep. There was no fee for electronics this year so again a busy year and yes, there are STILL old console and projection TVs out there.

MOVING for a CURE Lions Bill, Sue, Dennis, Mary and Steve participated in the walk. The weather was questionable but we all finished the course. Congratulations to Lion Greg Krug from Whittlesey who won the grand prize in the raffle.

HOLWAY SLUGGERS came to our May 24 meeting with an informative presentation for funding. A hard

working group doing good work. We decided to fund their efforts.

SCHOLARSHIPS On May 24, I presented the scholarships to our 2, 2023 recipients, Lukas Liske & Madie Ellis. Congratulations!

MAY 10 REGULAR MEETING;  Lion Dennis has invited a representative from the Aging & Disability Resource Center to our May10 meeting to speak to us about Dementia Care Services. This is a topic I feel will touch all of us at some point in our lives.

WELCOME: New member Bob Stolp! Thanks Lions Bill & Sue Breneman for sponsoring Bob and please, all members introduce yourselves and make Bob welcome.

ROADSIDE CLEAN-UP: A successful event with a lot of help! It seemed less trash this year than others. Thank you to all who turned out to help.

ZONE MEETING: April 10 @ Sports Page; 6PM. Lion Bill is our Zone Chair and promises a 30 minute meeting. It would be great if the club from the community hosting the meeting had a good turnout. Staying for the following Maplefest meeting at 6:30 gives you a chance to offer input.

DISTRICT CONVENTION: Remember to make hotel reservation ASAP if you are attending. Meal reservations are due April 7. The District is collecting trial size toiletries at the convention as a service project. We can collect any donations from club members thru our April 12 meeting. Each club will receive several bags assembled at the convention to distribute in their community. We also need to assemble a gift prize for the Governors raffle valued at $45-50. Please bring suggestions.                         Update:   Just a reminder, there is still time to sign up for the convention April 14-15 in Lac du Flambeau. Thanks Lions Mary & Shirley for organizing the toiletries and Governor’s gift basket.

Taylor County Lions Maplefest: Scheduled for April 29, 2023, this will be our first year in the Simek Center so look for a few modifications. The next committee meeting is April 10th at Sportspage. Raffle tickets are available and remember all clubs benefit from the proceeds of the sales.                                         Update:    There are opportunities to help with set up on the 28th as well as the day of the event. Please return Raffle tickets at the April 12 or 26 meeting.                                                     Update:     If you attended or worked for the event, I think the common theme was “good change of venue”. More details after the wrap up session.

Mark Your Calendar: At our March 8 meeting, Diane Solberg and Betty Herrell, both from Health View Eye Care will be talking to us about their volunteer mission to Central America and how Lions gave them the opportunity to provide better vision to those in need. This is great opportunity to learn how our local efforts and local volunteers can make an international difference. If anyone would like to invite potential Lion members to a meeting, this would be the perfect time to show what Lions do.

State Bowling;  Begins Feburary 18, 2023.

Deer Hides

Archery season is in full swing and hides have already started coming in. If you can help in any way let Lion Dave know. I understand one of the freezers we use until the weather gets colder is out of commission so depending on weather and response we may need a replacement. Deer Carcass dumpsters will be at the Medford DNR Station, Rib Lake Cenex Station, & the Gilman Corner Store after Oct. 25 depending on weather.

The rut is beginning and deer are moving which means more deer hides coming in. Please consider helping if Lion Dave reaches out. Of course the largest influx will be gun season Nov 19 through Nov 27 and the following week.

UPDATE;   As of Nov 30 over 600 deer hides have been collected & processed awaiting pick-up. Thanks to the Lions who are making this a part of their daily routine.

UPDATE    As of Jan 3,  Deer Hides are still trickling in as archery season runs thru Jan 8. 2023  700 hides have been sent in so far along with tails. There are still opportunities to help with this project and thank-you to those who have been working on it since late September.

UPDATE   After multiple months, deer hide collection is finally over. Thanks to chair Lion Dave and the regular and sometimes helpers who collected and processed hides. We managed to raise over $5000.00 with a few expenses still outstanding. Great work everyone!!

Lions State Curling Bonspiel   . Thanks to those who have signed up but there are still many places we need help. Most importantly, we need some “night owl” workers as the last draw doesn’t get OFF the ice until 11PM on Fri Jan 6 IF everything is on schedule. Breakfast starts serving at 7 AM Sat and curling resumes at 8 AM thru 9:30 PM.

UPDATE;  I again cannot say thank-you enough to all Lions/friends & spouses who showed up to make this event a success. I know the 10-18 hour days were grueling Friday & Saturday. I have received so many positive comments about our efforts and the overall Bonspiel experience from participants across the state.  Final numbers should be available soon.

Christmas Party:  UPDATE:  Party was POSTPONED untill Jan. 11, 2023 because of weather!!   RSVP only if there is a change in your status of attending!!   by Jan 5., for the Club Christmas Party  at BS Bar. Happy Hour from 5:30 – 6:30, Dinner at 6:30. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, bring a new wrapped gift valued at no more than $10.00. Call Lion Virginia @ 715-785-7145  There will be a brief  meeting following dinner.

UPDATE;     The Christmas Party committee wishes Thank everyone who came and enjoyed the party.  The food was great and fun was had by all.

Dial Santa: Scheduled for Dec 13 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Nicolet Bank. Anyone wishing to make a child’s evening a little brighter is encouraged to help out.  UPDATE;  Event canceled due to phone problems

Meals in a Backpack: Nikki Gripentrog reported 30 boxes of Thanksgiving supplies and gift certificates were delivered which served 82 children in our community. Our donation of $1000.00 covered most of the $1372.91 expense.

HARVEST DAYS PARADE What a fantastic day for the parade!! As usual the streets were packed with spectators and they seem to get farther north of Broadway every year. Lions Len, Mary, Rick, and I passed out candy and did a better job of rationing this year than in the past. Lion Len even dressed up as a pirate. Lion Sue wore the Lion costume. It is a fairly long route so she may need some arm work outs next year prior to the parade to keep up all that arm waving. Lion Jim did a fantastic job driving, keeping an even pace for us walkers. Great community exposure!

ZONE/MAPLEFEST meeting is Sept 12 at the Whittlesey ball park. Cocktails at 5:00 meeting at 5:30 with the meal at 6:30. Whittlesey Lions will provide a fish boil and hamburgers. Please bring a dish to pass. RSVP to myself (965-4343) or Lion Shirley (785-xxxx) so we can forward by Sept 9.

ROADSIDE CLEANUP is scheduled for Wed. Sept 28 at 5:00. This will be prior to our regular meeting so a “waiver” on Lion shirt or vest is in effect for that meeting. Our section of HWY 64 begins at Wren Drive (Cindy’s Bar just past the rodeo grounds) and extends for 2 miles. If have begun by the time you get there, just drive to where the next safety vests, bags and poker sticks are set out. Begin on the north side until the next vehicle and work the south side back to your vehicle. The more people the faster this service project goes.

WELOME BACK TO SCHOOL RESOURCE FAIR ;     The Medford Area School District would like to use this event to recognize and show appreciation to the Medford Lions for our support of students with visual impairments and their families. It will be Monday Aug 22 in the Lions shelters in the city park from 4:30 to 6:30. Food will be provided. All Lions are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Lion Shirley by 8/14. RSVPs need to be in to the district office by 8/15

The Great Duck Race
The Duck Race is scheduled for Sunday July 31. Ticket sales have started. If you any contact Lion Sue or pick some up at Medford Motors. Ticket sales at County Market begin July 19. A lot of Ducks get sold here, so if you can help please let Lion Sue know. I’m sure there will be a sign up sheet at our next meeting. Help will be needed “pulling ducks” and “race courses” set-up/take down. Times will be determined at upcoming meetings.

      UPDATE;

The rubber ducks have been put back in their nests in the storage shed. Thank-you Lion Sue for the leading the project, all who sold tickets, duck pullers, race course set up & take down crew, everyone who helped the day of the race, and our duck sorters. I’m not sure it was much of a race. Low water & a south wind made for VERY slow progress. But with a couple leaf blowers and extra duck herders, we finally got them across the finish line. I’ll have a list of winners for the next newsletter.

Rodeo Parking
We have agreed to help with parking July 16 for the rodeo. We will need at least 4 members to help in the main parking lot starting at 4:15. Meet at the spectator entrance & Pam will have vests and sticks for us. Helpers are welcome to stay for the performances.

       UPDATE:

Thank-you Lions Dave, Herman, Jim, Rick & Vic for packing the cars into the parking lot at the Rodeo. It was a huge turn- out & without your efforts so many vehicles could not have been stuffed into that field

Fourth of July
Thank-you to all of the club members who helped at the 4th of July food stand. Saturday’s crowd was pretty slim and business slow but that really changed for Sunday. Good hustle Lions! Thank-you Lion Dennis for chairing the event. We look forward to a report at upcoming meetings.

       UPDATE:

Again Thank-You to Chairman Lion Dennis and all who helped at the 4th of July food stand.

Dial-A-Santa Elves:    Committee: Lions Len Hamman, Chair & Dennis Christianson

UPDATE;    Dial Santa was successfully held on December 14th with the
assistance of Nicolet National Bank. While our total number of
children talked to was down from a high of 118 last year, we did talk
to 78 children which is still a solid number. Santa would like to
thank the following Lion Elves for their great work that night: Steve,
Rick & Vic! The Lions did an excellent job in conversing with the
children which can be difficult at times due to their young age. Well
done Lion Elves! And well done, Chair Lion Len Hamman!
