History of the Liverpool Lions Club
The Liverpool Lions Club was founded on October 10, 1938 and first met at the Locust Inn. The club started with 22 members and, according to Lions Clubs International, at that time Liverpool, Pennsylvania, was the smallest town in the U.S.A. with a Lions Club. Now, 80+ years later that can’t be too far from still being true. Early service projects included sponsoring the charter for Boy Scout Troup #91, whose first Scoutmaster was Edwin Wallis, a Charter Member Lion.
The club’s zeal for public service drove a need to raise funds, and so, as is common with most clubs, the Liverpool Lions Club embarked on a series of fundraising projects over the years. These have included sales of the traditional Lions’ brooms and light bulbs, Christmas fruitcakes, a “300 Club” 50/50 raffle, and a carnival. Today, we raise funds by selling "Daily Number" Raffle Tickets and by sponsoring fundraiser Bingo Nights utilizing a state of the art system we bought and installed in the Firehall.
Projects over the years have been varied. In the early years, the club helped erect the first backstop and bleachers for the community's first ball field. In the 1950s, the club bought acreage for a community swimming pool and athletics fields at the south end of town and donated it to what is now the Liverpool Area Recreation Association. This past year we contributed to the refurbishing of the public picnic pavilion and playground adjacent to the pool and ball fields. The club also bought a one-room former schoolhouse in town which we still maintain and make available for community needs. The club installed and still maintains a community walking track around the ball field and erected a flagpole in a public area along Routes 11/15.
Recently in a coordinated community effort, we reclaimed through landscaping a vacant lot at the entrance to our town as a "Community Commons". The beautifully landscaped Community Commons features a mural depicting the history of our town, a "Little Free Library" and a bench to view the eagles soaring over the Susquehanna River. We also assisted in the construction of a new "Welcome to Liverpool" sign at the entrance to our community and installed Memorial Plaques to members, past and present, of the five branches of our armed forces.
Liverpool has other community organizations, like the American Legion, the Volunteer Fire Company and the Civic Club, with whom the Liverpool Lions Club cooperates in sponsoring an Easter egg hunt, organizing the Halloween Parade, and sponsoring a Community Christmas Event. Also at Easter, the club distributes about 150 fruit baskets to families throughout the area. Closing out the year the club sponsors community service awards for a deserving senior at both Newport and Greenwood High Schools.
For many years the home for the meetings of the Liverpool Lions Club has been the Liverpool Fire Hall where they get a truly excellent home-style meal, while at the same time supporting the Liverpool Volunteer Fire Company through the Auxiliary, which prepares and serves the meals. Over the years the Liverpool Lions Club has remained a dedicated group of individuals gathered together in fellowship with a focus on the betterment of the community.
