Meetings

The Linwood Lions Club has proudly been serving the Linwood community and participating in the wider vision of Lionism since it was chartered on April 5, 1951 with 36 members. It was sponsored by the Southmont Lions Club. A few years after it was chartered, the members of the club built the Lions Den on Linwood-Southmont Road (now redesignated as 4508 Old Linwood Road), where they still meet. The lumber for the building came from people in the community.

Early in the club’s history, it became associated with the Davidson County Agricultural Fair, where it once operated two food booths. The Linwood Lions Club still operates one food booth at the Fair where it is the only service organization still serving food. The Club's second main fundraiser is a series of turkey shoots held each year in October, November, and December. The shoots have become community events and are much enjoyed by people from Linwood and surrounding communities. Other fundraising  projects have included raffles, candy days, broom sales, and yard sales.

Our members have built ramps and decks for Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) whom we serve. When needed, we transport VIPs to activities and events within the county and beyond. We sponsor VIPs’ attendance of Camp Dogwood for the Blind each summer and the VIP Fishing Tournament each fall on the Outer Banks. For several years, we hosted a VIP walkathon (the brainchild of member Edith Clark, who was legally blind). We regularly contribute to the North Carolina Lions Foundation‘s  Brighter Visions Campaign, leading our district in amount per member last year. We currently lead the State in amount per member for the 2024-2025 Lions Year. We also contribute to Lions Club International Foundation. Six of our current members are Melvin Jones Fellows.

Club members are active in the community and at the county, district, and state levels. Lions Tim and Debbie Williams both served as president of the Davidson County Lions Council, and Lion Stevie Hedrick will fill that position for the 2024-2026 Lions years. One of our members, Lion Tim Williams, served as District Governor in 2012-13 and as NC Lions Council of Governors Chairperson in 2016-17.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.
