Christmas Dress-A-Child Project
Each December, the La Mesa Lions meet at the Wal-Mart in Las Cruces to provide $100 worth of clothes for 20-30 children ifrom needy families residing in the La Mesa, San Miguel, Mesquite and Vado communities. A Lion escorts each child and a parent to select the desired clothes. Needless to say there are many smiling faces after the event.
Christmas Food Baskets Project
Each December at the La Mesa Community Center, La Mesa Lions meet to distribute Christmas Food Baskets to 30+ deserving families from the Vado, San Miguel, Mesquite, and La Mesa communities. Books, XMAS stockings, and knitted caps and scarfs are given to the children and hot dogs and drinks were provided for the parents and children. Some times the children also get to visit with Santa and enjoy a piñata.
Gadsden High School Scholarships
The La Mesa Lions Club annually awards four $2,000 scholarships. Three are awarded to Gadsden High School seniors who plan on attending a college in NM. One is awarded to a college student who previously was awarded a first year scholarship from the Club. Funds for the scholarships are raised from the Club's annual Lion Chope Benavidez Memorial Golf Tournament each April.
La Mesa Lions Health Fair
On 12 October 2019, the La Mesa Lions Club held their 3rd annual health fair at the San Jose Catholic Church Parish Hall. There was 15 booths the Fun and Fitness Fair as well as the Blue Cross Blue Shield NM van where blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and vision screenings were conducted. There was also entertainment for the kids with kiddie train rides, face painting and chances to win a new bike.
La Mesa Lions Club Arbor Day Project
On 28 April 2018 (the day after Arbor Day), Club members met at the La Mesa Community Park to plant some schrubs and trees as an Arbor Day Project. This is part of the Club's efforts to improve the La Mesa Community Park and Baseball Park. After everything was planted, members headed for Chope's Cafe for some good Mexican food and a cool drink.
La Mesa Lions Club Annual Chope Benavidez Memorial Golf Tournament
The last Friday in April each year, Club members meet at the NMSU Golf Course for their annual Golf Tournament in memory of Lion Chope Benavidez who was one of the Club's greatest Lions. Proceeds from the tournament provide funds for four $2,000 scholarships for Gadsden High School graduating seniors each year. Normally 100+ golfers play in the golf scramble and Club members sell about 100 hole sponsorships.
