ABOUT LIONS
Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy.
Our 45,000 clubs in 205 countries around the world and more than 1.3 million members make Lions Clubs International the world's largest service club organization. Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States in 1917 by Melvin Jones, a Chicago businessman. Jones personal code was “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,” and this a constant reminder to many Lions members of the importance of community service.
The Lions motto is “We Serve” and their programs include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, and many other humanitarian programs.
Local clubs are active with help for the visually impaired, the homeless, Habitat for Humanity, Diabetes Awareness, collecting used glasses that are refurbished and used in third world countries, feeding and clothing children in need and this is just a few of our activities. We assist people that are financially in need with the purchase of glasses and cataract surgeries.
Much of the Lions Clubs International work as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes and all funds raised by Lions Clubs are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept separate and paid for by members. Most of the money raised goes toward projects that benefit the local community.
The genius of Lionism is that the local club has complete autonomy in determining its area of service within its own community. In addition to their own local projects and charities, Lions Clubs join with other Lions throughout the world to help people in need.
