RULES for 2014 Lions Ice Cream

CHURN – OFF”

  1. PURPOSE:  This is a contest of skill and good old fashion recipes.  Proceeds from entry fees are used 100% to support Lions Charitable Activities.....especially, Texas Lions Camp.  Last summer three Kerens area children were able to attend Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville.
  2. PRIZES:
    1. For 1st place - $200 gift certificate + TROPHY
    2. For 2nd place - $50 gift certificate
    3. For 3rd place - $25 gift certificate
  3. ENTRY FEES:
    1. $10 per entry if received by the Club by 3 October 2014.
    2. $15 per entry if received by the Club by 15 October 2014
    3. $20 per entry if paid after 15 October 2014
  4. ENTRY PREPARATION:  The following specific rules apply to each entry:
    1. Ice cream must be made on 18 October 2014.
    2. Ice cream must be delivered to the Lions “Churn-Off” stall no later than 2PM in order to be judged.
    3. Ice cream must be presented in the churn in which it was made with the dasher still in the ice cream.  If one churn is used to make multiple entries, the contestant must show that all were made on the 18th. (discuss with Lions contest manager prior to the 18th)
    4. A list of ingredients (but not how much of each ingredient) must be delivered with each entry on the 18th.   In the event that a judge is allergic to an ingredient, that entry will be graded by the remaining judges.
    5. Churning the ice cream at your house or elsewhere and bringing it to the stall by 2PM is perfectly acceptable.  A limited number of churning stations are available at the Lions stall – issued on first come first served basis starting at 12:30 PM.
  5. The entries which win an award become the property of the contest and will be offered to the public to raise funds for Lions charities.   Non-award winning entries are invited to offer their entries to the public to help raise additional proceeds for Lions charities but are not required to do so.
  6. Award ceremony will be conducted on the Cotton Harvest stage (if possible) at (time to be determined).
  7. Judging will be by three distinguished business/political leaders of the community.

JUDGING Criteria

For Lions Ice Cream “CHURN-OFF”

18 October 2014

 

SCORING:   Judges will individually rank the contestants using the criteria below.  The rankings from each judge will be added together to determine the order of contest finish.

TIE Resolution:  In the event of a tie for 1st, the judges will resample and revote on the tied ice creams.  If tie remains, cash prizes will be split between the tied contestants and the trophy will be awarded to the  contestant with the earliest registration for the contest.  If 2nd and 3rd place tie, the cash prizes will be split between them.

CRITERIA:  Criteria are in order of importance.  Ties within judges’ rankings will be broken by using the scores (in order) for each criterion.  If not resolved, the tied ice creams will be given the average score of the rankings involved.   

To calibrate the judges – a commercial vanilla ice cream will be used as an initial standard.

First Criteria:   Taste

( 1  Awful! - 10  Superior! )

Second Criteria:  Texture 

( 1  Is this even ice cream?  -  10  oh so creamy! )

Third Criteria:  Local Ingredients  

( 1  peaches don’t come from cans! - 10  who knew you could use cotton seed oil?)

Fourth Criteria: Unique

( 1  Nothing special - 10  I never thought pecans & tomatoes could taste like this!!! )
