Construction of a Lions Centre at Bulyankuyege (30km on Kampala-Gayaza-Zirobwe road)
The Centre will house a Maternity Unit, Children Unit, Eye care centre and a Multi-purpose hall for Youth activities. The land has already been secured and designs completed. Funds mobilisation is on-going and construction will start soon.
Cataract Operations/Surgeries
We continue to restore sight to those who have been blinded by cataracts. A number of Eye camps have been planned and 36 cataract operations were carried out during the February 22, 2014 medical camp at Namwendwa Health Centre in rural Kamuli District in Eastern Uganda. Over 200 students of Kitante primary school in Kampala were also screened for visual impairments and all those found with difficulties were referred to Mulago hospital for treatment at the Club's expense.
Medical Camps
The Club continues to offer free medical care to the deserving rural communities. Over 2000 patients were treated for free at Namwendwa Health Centre IV in Kamuli district. Another camp to tackle malaria cases is planned at a yet to be identified venue.
Registration of Patients at a medical Camp
Literacy Program
The Club is raising funds for supporting needy children in school. Over the past eight months the Club in partnership with New Vision publishing company and National Library, have distributed reading materials to children in disadvantaged schools in and around Kampala and at our proposed location of the Lions Centre.
Tree Planting
We continue to value our environment and conservation is part of our agenda. We have a pledge to plant 10000 trees before the end of this lionistic year and we have so far planted over 1000 at the Lions leisure park at Makerere University and at the site of the proposed Lions centre.
Care for the physically challenged
Recognising that amidst us are people with physical challenges, the Club ocassionally supports The Salvation Army Home of the Disabled in Wandeya with food items and clothing and reading materials. We have also established a partnership with CoRSU Hospital to help children with Club feet and Cleft lips.
Plastic-free zone
Plastics have become a big problem is Uganda and each day we continue to struggle to deal with their effects on the environment. The Club has a project to rid the Kamwokya area of plastics in partnership with the local authorities. Through sensitisation and mobilisation we are teaching the local population on how to seperate plastics from other rubbish so as to minimize the side effects.
Leo Clubs
The Club continues to engage the youth through formation and support of Leo Clubs at various university campuses. We have active Leo Clubs at Makerere University, Kampala International University, Makerere University Business School and Kitebi Secondary school. Another University is planned for Crested Secondary School.
