The activity was Tagged: “Let’s plant Trees To Save the Environment,” the activity had members of the club, staff and students of Ikeja Junior and Senior High School, as well as a representative of the Lagos State Ministry of Education in attendance.
President of the club, Lion Ahmed Olusi said the exercise was chosen as its July activity, following in the steps of Lagos State, which usually celebrates tree planting every July 14.
Stating that the exercise is to inculcate the culture and vital role of tree planting in youngsters, Lion Olusi listed the significance of the exercise to include, “mitigating climate change, releasing oxygen to the planet, serving as windbreaker to mitigate consequences of global warming, as well as other economic values.”
Environmental and Scientific Officer of the Co-curricular, Science and Tech Department of Lagos State Ministry of Education (District 6), Dr (Mrs) Kudirat Olubukonla Adeyemi, commended Ikeja Metro Lions Club for what she described as “Propagating a message about the sustainability of the environment.”
She added that, “What they have come to do is to plant coconut trees and we know that coconut trees are very important, especially when we are talking about the heritage of Lagos State; and if you look around, you will see that that heritage is on the brink of fading out, which is why their intervention is vital.”
Vice Principal of State Senior High School, Mrs Akomolafe appreciated the club for the effort, confessing that the club’s visit has availed her more knowledge about trees, while her counterpart in Ikeja Junior High School, Mrs Falowo, pledged that the three schools in the compound will do their best to protect and nurture the trees to growth.
