History of the Chinatown Lions Club
In 1972 Charter President Lion Wilfred Pang was serving as President of the Waikiki Lions Club, and also as Cabinet Secretary under District Governor Harry Yee. Not being busy enough Lion Wilfred saw the need for a Lions Club in the Chinatown area, and recruited 33 of his friends to form the nucleus of this new club.
The chartering date was March 7, 1973. Our club was officially launched along with two other clubs (Hawaii Kai and Bay View) at a Chartering Banquet at the Wo Fat Restaurant on May 12, 1973. There were 49 Charter Members including 6 Wongs, 6 Youngs, 5 Changs, along with Chee, Chings, Choo, Chun, Chungs, Lim, Lin, Liu, Lums, Yap, Yees and Yep; as well as other nationalities. Today we have 3 remaining Charter Members.
Throughout our 40 year history the Chinatown Lions Club has certainly accomplished a great deal of service to humanity, our community and the world. Our leaders have also served with distinction on the District 50 level. We have given our District 2 District Governors, a current 2nd Vice District Governor, 6 Region Chairmen, 11 Zone Chairmen, 3 Cabinet Secretaries, 2 Cabinet Treasurers, 1 Administrative Assistant for 3 different terms, and a countless number of Committee Chairs, including the Host Committee Chair for the recent 2015 Honolulu Lions Club International Convention.
The club also takes great pride in sponsoring the award winning Roosevelt High School Leo Club.
