2013-2014 Hazelhurst Lions Peace Poster contest winners
The Hazelhurst Lions participate each year, along with Lions clubs around the world to proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For over 25 years, more than eight million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. Twenty-four international finalists are selected each year, representing the work of more than 350,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibits around the world.
This year’s theme for the 2013-2014 Peace Poster Contest was "Our World, Our Future." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, were eligible to participate. Participants used a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created were unique and convey the young artists' life experiences and culture. Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters will advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.
As in years past, the kids of MHLT, our local school, were asked to take part in this competition. At our local level, Hazelhurst Lions poster chairperson Barb Logan, working in conjunction with MHLT art teacher Salena White, provided direction and guidance to the 57 MHLT students who participated in this year’s contest. In addition to a monetary award given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, framed commemorative certificates were presented to first place winner, MacKenzie Lech and to art teacher Salena White.
The Hazelhurst Lions wish to thank all participants and are proud to announce the winners of the 2013 " Our World, Our Future." Peace Poster contest:
First Place with an award of $50 went to MHLT 8th grade student, Mackenzie Lech. Her poster will now be eligible for district competition. Mackenzie tried to convey the “Our World, Our Future” theme with a depiction of a child’s optimistic face on a background of the world’s flags. The eyes reveal a hopeful evolution from the horror of 9/11 to a future were the world can work together to achieve peace. Of note is the fact that Mackenzie was a third place winner in last year’s contest.
The Second Place winner with an award of $35 went to 8th grade student, Bobbi Steines. Her poster portrayed a tight gathering of doves eventually set free to roam the world as ambassadors of peace in anticipation that they would bring about a more peaceful world. Again, of note, Bobbi was a third place winner 2 years ago.
Third Place and an award of $25 went to 6th grade student Dawson Black. His poster showed a globe of the world on a background of a U.S. flag with a banner of the world’s flags being held by a dove. He was trying to illustrate that the goal of peace be shared.

2012 Hazelhurst Ballpark Pavilion Project

Hazelhurst Lions Club Start Restoration of Pavilion
Ground has been broken for the renovation and expansion of the Hazelhurst Ballpark pavilion and concession stand. First built in 1987, this structure has served the needs of the community for nearly 25 years. It has been used by Hazelhurst residents and the general public, for town and community functions, and of course for Lions sponsored events (Art & Craft Fair, Car Show and Flea Market). It has been maintained over the years by the Hazelhurst Lions, but the years have taken their toll on the building and, in addition, increasing attendance of sponsored events has strained the serving ability of the kitchen. Recognizing these needs, which extensive maintenance alone would not solve, the Hazelhurst Lions Club decided to undertake the task of completely renovating the structure. It is hoped that the new pavilion addition phase (with approximately 1400 square feet under roof) will be completed in June. After the pavilion phase is completed, the existing concession stand structure will be renovated, increasing the floor space area and adding much needed room for food preparation.
The Hazelhurst Lions are providing the greater part of funding, and along with volunteers, all of the labor. Gary Sobek Architects have completed the building plans. Local businesses - Nimsgren Steel Corp. is fabricating and supplying structural steel components and County Materials Corp. is supplying the ready-mix concrete for floor. These donations are much appreciated.
