Club History

In 1988 a Lion from Fairfield Lions Club came to town seeking to help start a new Lions Club in Grapeland. His first stop was at the Grapeland Cable TV office. He visited with owner, Gary Raines. Not knowing much about lionism, Gary called his friend Weldon Kerby who joined their meeting. Shortly thereafter Wayne Kaminsky got involved.

The first organized meeting was held at the Grapeland Cable TV office located at 122 S. Oak St. in Grapeland. On May 10, 1988 the Grapeland Noon Lions Club was chartered at what was then Smart's Restaurant at 12946 US Hwy 287 North in Grapeland. There were 26 charter members to sign the charter, 24 men and 2 women. It was only in 1987 that Lions Club International permitted women to join.

The club has met in several locations over the years, including: Smart's Restaurant, Grapeland Housing Authority, and Grapeland Cafe & Creamery. Our current meeting spot is The Grapeland Cafe, which is ironically the former Smart's Restaurant.

Our sponsoring club was the Palestine Lions club.

Our original officers were:

President - James Sockwell, Postmaster

Vice President - Gary Raines, owner of Grapeland Cable

Secretary/Treasurer - Wayne Kaminsky, Telephone Co.

Tail Twister - Weldon Kerby, owner of Grapeland Messenger

Our district governor at the time was Jack Nelson.

Our first Lions Club event was an aution held at the Grapeland Elementary School cafeteria to collect funds to start a bank account. It is thought they raised about $700.

Our club still includes several charter members.

In 2018 we celebrated our 30th Birthday!

Martha Childress was our club's first female president, serving 2018-2019.

Charter members Wayne and Billie Kaminsky graciously donated this shadowbox of Lions pins.
