October 2014 - Lions Conker Challenge

The Cross Lane Fruit Farm, once again invited us to bring our Conker Challenge to their open day in October. As with previous years, we have tried to instill the old game of conkers to children who do not know the fun in the game of Conkers. It is often the parents who come to the tent first and then try to encourage their children to take part.

Lions aim for growth - April 2014
A formal presentation was made of a cheque for £280 from Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club to residents of Mowforth Close, Woodcote in February to pay for a new greenhouse to replace the   one destroyed by the recent very strong winter winds.

Goring Lunch Club Memories - June 2013
Members of Goring Lunch Club for the over-60’s is gathering together some familiar objects from the recent past that stimulate memories and conversation. With the help of a £200 donation from Goring, Woodcote & District Lions the lunch club run by Age UK Oxfordshire has started a project to compile a number of reminiscence kits. Each kit is aimed at having a different theme, ranging from music to cookery and military service.

Food banked by Lions
As part of the funds raised at the 29th Annual 10k Charity Road Run organised by Goring, Woodcote & District Lions  held in January 2013 the Club has purchased and donated two supermarket trolley loads of food to the Wallingford Food Bank.

VISIT OF CHENOBYL CHILDREN

On 3rd August 2012, the Lions Club of Goring, Woodcote & District hosted a party of young children from Chenobyl, Ukraine. Groups of these children come to the UK each year for a period of respite and to improve their health. Like in previous years, the Lions took the children to Rushall's Farm, near Stanford Dingley, which is a working farm used to help educate children in the ways the countryside.

NEW SEATS FOR RESIDENTS

To the great delight and appreciation of 12 elderly residents of the SOHA Housing facility at Mowforth Close in Woodcote, the Lions Club of Goring, Woodcote & District have provided two new three seater garden benches

Attending the installation and handover of these sturdy yet comfortable and maintenance free garden seats residents Doris Rook, Jean Walker and Lydia Smith. The two garden bench seats are made from recycled plastic and are completely weatherproof, won't rot, corrode or splinter and are ideal for exposed situations. The Mowforth Close building opened in April 2012 by local MP John Howell comprises 12 self-contained apartments, a lounge with verandah overlooking a secluded garden.

KISSING GATES

The Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club support not ony those in need but also projects that will improve the environment in our area. In the past this has included litter picking and as you can see lower down this page, tree planting.

Another project that we have supported this year is to provide 3 "kissing gates" to the Chiltern Society. Their aim is to have all the styles on the 200 mile Chiltern Way replaced by gates to assist in the use of the path for all.  ( http://www.chilternsociety.org.uk/ )

The 3 gates we have supplied are being installed in the Woodcote area. The first two have now been installed, one in Woodcote and the other at the edge of Dean Wood, a couple of miles NE of the A4074.

TREES FOR THE COMMUNITY

In 2011 the Lions Clubs International President challenged Lions around the world to plant 1 million trees in 2011/2012.  (see details)

By March 2012 nearly 7 million trees have been planted!!  (view update)

As this Lions International challenge coincides with the Royal Jubilee plan to plant trees in the UK, the Lions of the Goring, Woodcote & District have started our contribution to both projects.
