“A PEARL IS A PEARL ... ALWAYS PRECIOUS AND SHINES WITH A LUSTER UNEQUALLED”
Our humble beginning...
The Lions Club of George Town Mutiara was sponsored by the Lions Club of Georgetown Central and received her instruments of charter from Lions Club International on 13th April 1988 with Lion Danny Lim as her Charter President. The Club was the first Lions Club in the District (Malaysia) to comprise members from both genders.
Our name - Lions Club of George Town Mutiara...
Penang is known as the “Pearl of the Orient”. Being a club formed on the island, the name “Pearl” is most suitable and we named ourselves in the national language “Mutiara”.
The beautiful and desirable “Mutiara”...
“Mutiara” is not only lustrous and beautiful on the outside, it also serves as an effective traditional medicine for internal healing when crushed and swallowed. As Past International Director Dato’ Douglas Lee said, “Not only are you beautiful and desirable outside, you are also life-saving when applied inside”.
Our Logo...
Our logo represents a frame of the rising sun that encloses the moon. The rising sun and moon symbolize the strength and unity of club members in carrying out the objects of Lionism, regardless of time.
The “Pinang” tree which stands on the island symbolizes the island of Penang which we love, care and honor proudly.
“Mutiara” means a pearl that will never lose its luster, thus depicting our everlasting sincerity in supporting and helping the nation and mankind.
Formation and Charter Ceremony Night...
Eleven former Leos and nine service-minded friends of Leos were inducted by then-District Governor Ong Tat Lien on 20th April 1988. The function was held at Corner Club, Gurney Drive, Penang. The ceremony was witnessed by some fifty members of the Lions family.
The Charter Presentation cum Installation Ceremony was held at Feringghi Beach Hotel on 25th June 1988.
Our Club's Achievements...
There is no better way to express the true spirit of Lionism than its motto of "WE SERVE"
Our Club has successfully carried out numerous projects on Community and Welfare Services, one of which is the adoption of very poor families which was started in 1989 till now. Other projects include blood donation, health screening, distribution of 'ang-pow' (red packets) to the old folks' homes and orphanages. Today our Club has gained support and recognition from both the public and private sectors. Our latest achievement was when the club signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Pantai Hospital, Penang to set up the "Lins GTM-Pantai Penang Medical Fund" on 15 May 2010.
We are proud that the Club has produced two Lions Dignitaries in Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah Cheng Wah (Charter Member) and Paet District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat.
