Low Vision Reader
The Low Vision Reader uses a closed circuit camera connected to any television through a cable. The television needs to be set to the proper channel (auxiliary). The camera height is adjustable to increase or decrease the field of view and with that change of height will change the size of the image on the television screen. The television in the image is 13 inch and with a larger screen the television image will be larger. These readers have been used successfully by individuals with limited vision throughout the area and also central Indiana, enabling them to see pictures and read again. A television is not included with the Low Vision Reader.
Operation KidSight
Our Club is one of five local Indiana Lions Clubs who are part of the Elkhart Metro KidSight. We offer free eye screening to children in the community at scheduled daycare site screenings. The screening is to determine the presence of possible eye disorders including farsightedness and nearsightedness, astigmatism, strabismus (misaligned eyes) anisometropia (unequal prescriptions) and media opacities (i.e. cataracts). No eye drops or medications are used. This screening is approximately 85-90% effective in detecting significant factors that can cause a decrease in vision.
White Cane Day
Neither rain, sleet, nor snow will keep the Elkhart Community Lions Club from holding their White Cane Day in front of the Wal-Mart Store on County Road 6 collecting donations for our many community projects.
Fish Fry
The Elkhart Community Lions is often complimented for the fried fish at the American Legion Hall in Bristol. The members usually participate in six fish fries a year. Check the event calendar for the next date we are there.
Bazaar
Who can resist all those home baked goods? We have a table at the Faith Methodist Church on the corner of County Road 17 and County Road 18. We will be there from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the second Saturday of November. Come check out all the baked goods and the "Terri Lynn" nuts.
Beds and Britches Etc.
Our Club holds a shower for the B.A.B.E.'s organization every year. Our donations include new and used clothing for newborns up through size 5, along with various other items and money.
Eyeglass Mission
Two Club Members participated in the trip this year to San Louis de la Paz, Mexico, where almost 4,700 individuals came to the clinic to have their eyes checked and be fitted for glasses if needed. Once you have participated in one of these missions, you will want to go back again and again. In 2005, nine club members participated in the eyeglass mission.
