"We Serve"
Derry Lions Club takes seriously the Lions Club International motto, “We Serve.” Some of our ongoing projects include:
Students of the Month: Every month Derry Lions Club honors outstanding students, one each from Derry Area High School, and Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center. Students are recognized at the club meeting and in newspaper publicity. The club also offers an annual scholarship to a graduating high school senior.
Funnel cakes! Every summer, Derry Lions Club members make and sell funnel cakes at the New Alexandria Lions Club Demolition Derby, held eight times a summer along with the Fall Brawl every October. Proceeds from the funnel cake sales fund Derry Lions community donations for the year, including the annual free community Thanksgiving dinner cosponsored with Derry Area Ministerial Association, Christmas food boxes provided to families in need as part of the KIND (Kids in Need in Derry) project in Derry Area School District, eyeglasses for those who cannot afford them, support for Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Westmoreland County Blind Association, Derry Area Grandview Elementary School music program, Lions Leader Dog program, Lions Club International Foundation, and other state and district projects.
Brooms! The famed Lions Club brooms are available for sale at several businesses in the community. These long-lasting brooms are available in heavy-duty and regular sizes.
Vision screening: Derry Lions Club members help screen for glaucoma as well as acuity at the annual Senior Expo held at Ramada Inn, Greensburg, as well as other sites as needed.
Union Mission: Once a month, club members prepare and share an evening meal with residents of Union Mission, the homeless shelter for men in Westmoreland County, located in Derry Township.
Local festivals: Derry Lions Club participates in the annual Railroad Days parade each September in Derry, and in the Fort Ligonier Days parade in October in Ligonier, PA.
Eyeglass and hearing aid collection: Derry Lions Club has several collection boxes located throughout the community to accept old eyeglasses and hearing aids that are refurbished and distributed to others throughout the country.
Keystone State Park cleanup: Derry Lions Club members help clean up this local state park at least once a year.
