CROWN POINT LIONS CLUB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Why I became a Lion
A Family Affair
Lion Louise Moore has been a member since April 27, 2005. She has served as the Greeting Committee, Membership Chair and currently as Chairperson of Flowers/Cards.
“The reason I joined Lions Club was because of family members. My daughter in law’s mother, Joan Sherrington, Donna Worst and Jim Worst. Joan and I did Meals on Wheels delivery. We also did the eye glass collection at Bingo for the less fortunate. Other influential prominent Lions member’s were Ron and Betty Kerbs who was always there to service our community. I have continued service since being a Girl Scout leader and Den Mother. I’m a W.P. Wood’s Fellowship Recipient.”
Lion Carla Smolek became a member September 1, 2021. She is Chairman of the Backpack Project and is currently President.
“I needed another outlet to continue to serve local and abroad. My mother Lion Louise Moore, Brother Lion Jim Worst, Lion Donna Worst are all members of our club. I have always served in some form locally and abroad. Being able to see how our eyeglass collection. Serving others in Mexico in 8 days 12,400 folks to have vision. I served as 1st Vice President. Now, I’m President of our club. I have received the Melvin Jones Fellow award. James E. MacLennan Everyday Hero Award from Up With People International Alumni Board.”
Lion Donna Worst, a member since February 2003, has served in many positions. She is a Melvin Jones recipient and currently the club Treasurer.
“For many years, I loved attending the Crown Point Lions Club bingo events. One day, a member invited me to one of their dinner meetings. I found a fun group of people dedicated to giving back to their community. Growing up as a Girl Scout, I understood the importance of serving others, so I joined the Crown Point Lions Club in February 2003. A year later, my mother, Joan Sherrington, retired from the Calumet Girl Scout Council and I asked her to join. Without hesitation, she joined and became the club’s Secretary for the next 10 years. She also became a Melvin Jones recipient. A few years later, my mother-in-law, Louise Moore joined, my husband Jim Worst joined in 2007, and my sister-in-law Carla Smolek joined in 2021. Now, it’s a family affair. And like family, many of the club members have become some of my very best friends. It’s fun doing things with your family and friends, especially when you know you’re helping others. Like my mother, I jumped right in and became an active member, serving as President in 2007 and 2023, and currently club Treasurer.
One memorable moment was during a District Convention, where they showcased special cameras that could take pictures of children’s eyes as young as 18 months without touching them. This eye screening technique helps parents know if their child needs to be seen by an eye care professional. In fact, undetected vision problems before age 7 can become permanent. Most parents are unaware of their child’s vision problems until they start school, and by then, it may be too late. I brought this service project idea back to the club, and I’m proud to say the Crown Point Lions Club has been screening the eyes of Crown Point preschool children for over 20 years. “
Are you a service-minded individual who would like to make new friends? Come and join the Crown Point Lions Club. I would love to be your friend!’
