President’s Message
Talk of the month was COO (Change of Officers) night, well for me anyhow, as it did involve some work by me. Not much but some. Thanks again to John Darby for his input into the night, installing our new board for the year 2019/20. Thanks to the members who agreed to accept positions of responsibility for the next year.

It was very pleasing to have so many guests accept the invitation to attend the COO. Wives, partners, and specially invited members from other clubs

I was very pleased overall with our COO night. A good venue with some modifications, like table clothes and maybe speaker system to help speakers to be heard clearly. I thought the meal had a range of very good food, which I hope satisfied everybody - plus live entertainment. Tea and coffee had to be bought at the bar. Sorry, I didn’t know that so I could have informed people.

Last week Russell and I attended our zone meeting with the main topic being recruitment. The reason for this is membership is very low in District E. We have 1260 members which is 10 away from being put into transition. 1250 members and above we stay as District E.

What does "Transition" mean? LCI will re-district us, most likely with our southern neighbors whose territory includes Dunedin. Maybe they will cut that district at Timaru - who knows. Logistically it makes for a huge area for anyone to get around and a real nightmare for the District Governors team. Needless to say, we then run into real danger of losing our Multiple District in NZ with Australia our only neighbor holding that title. If this occurs, it may well impact on our District Fees due to travel.

I have added this to inform older members who understand how Lions work and newer members of things we didn’t know. I’m not sure what Multiple District in NZ means so I will be asking a question. We are always learning something every day. At the next meeting please ask any questions about this if it concerns you or just like to understand what is going on.

Looking forward to the next meeting in changing times

President Maurice

The club can remain proud!

President Maurice looks on at a very successful gathering of members, wives partners and invited guests at the 51st change and installation of club officers.

With such a long tradition, the current cloud hanging over the club – and, indeed, the District - is of concern but, whatever the outcome, Christchurch North Lions Club can be proud of the huge contribution it has made to the community, to institutions and to individuals over the years.

Extract from the Constitution and By-laws, The International Association of Lions Clubs.

ARTICLE VIII District Organization
Section 1. JURISDICTION FOR FORMING DISTRICTS. Geographic regions shall be divided into districts (single, sub- and multiple) and administrative units as provided for by the International Board of Directors.
Section 2. MINIMUM DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS. On formation, a district shall consist of thirty-five (35) clubs in good standing and a total membership of at least one thousand two hundred and fifty (1,250) Lions clubs members in good standing unless otherwise approved by a 2/3 vote of the International Board of Directors.

Welcome to our new Board for 2019-2020
The incoming Board has a wealth of experience, added to by the addition of new Board Member, John Broadhurst.
We thank them for again offering their services. As PDG John Darby said when conducting the installation: "With fewer members, the Board is now reliant on individuals stepping up once again to give their time and input. The Board can be assured that every member of the club is in support."

Wearing a new hat...

Our Zone Chairman, John Hobson, was a welcome guest at our Change of Officers meeting. He also livened the evening with a Sing Along, presenting all the old familiar favouritesthat everyone knew. The result was rousing support that was probably much enjoyedby members of the Papanui Club in an adjacent room.

Time is taking its toll:
There have been a number of Past District Governors from Districts throughout the country who have recently died.

Of particular sadness was the report of the death of Frank Mitchell from our own 202E. Frank was District Governor in 1983/84 and very active in Camp Quality and Youth Exchange for which he received a much warranted QSM.

Also of note was the recent passing of Rhona Collins, wife of Past Council Chairman Bob Collins (1977-78). In earlier years, Bob, supported by Rhona, played a major role as a Multiple District Officer.

And for the final note in the Bulletin, what better way than to say: “Congratulations Crusaders – and best wishes to those team members who are moving on.”
