Canso Lions Club
56 years of Service
The Canso Lions Club received its Charter on April 25th 1968, the original membership was 21 with members from Canso and surrounding communities.Over the years the Canso Lions Club met at the Mermaid Lodge,Phalen Hall and Canso High School until a new Lion's Den was opened in 1983 during the term of King Lion Alvin Winmill.
From its very inception the Canso Lions Club has been involved in every aspect of life in the Canso area,numerous projects have aided individuals and families in need. Canso Lions have assisted the Canso Daycare, Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso Arena, Canso Fire Department,Canso Library,Canso Minor Hockey, Canso Academy and Fanning Education Centre, Shamrock Seniors Club, Town of Canso,Canso,Eastern Counties Youth Association, Scouts,Cadets,Canso Regatta,Canso Curling Club,local museums,Little Dover Development Association and GOALS.
Public projects include the construction of the Seamen's Memorial in 1976 and hosting the Annul Provincial Seamen's Memorial Service on the second Sunday in August plus numerous projects in the Canso area.
The Lions Den is an important facility for the Lions and the community hosting benefit bingo, telethons,Cable TV, children's programs,darts,card plays and public meetings.
Canso Lions Club has a history of 50 years of service to our community and the goals of Lion's International. Our members continue to serve our community as we begin our next 50 years as the Canso Lions Club.
