HISTORY OF BOLIVIA LIONS CLUB
The Bolivia Lions Club was chartered August 17, 1949. The sponsoring club was the Wilmington Lions Club. Charter Night was held at the Bolivia High School gymnasium with twenty members installed by Lion Louis K. Day, DG 31-C. Lions Ed H. McMahan, International Director, was the speaker. In 1951 Bolivia placed first in a field of ten clubs for the largest net increase in membership.
Meetings were held in the Bolivia High gymnasium then later moved to the Bolivia Town Hall. Currently, social meetings are held at restaurants and occasionally at the homes of members. Some of these have included steak cookouts, fish fry’s, and covered dish suppers.
Early projects were gospel sings, sales of light bulbs, brooms, fruit cakes, and live chickens! More recently, fund raisers included a golf tournament, food booths at area celebrations, “sitting” for a Coastal Living Home, and sale of BBQ plates. A new venture is the sale of “Attraction” entertainment books promoting special prices at local restaurants and businesses.
Members have volunteered endless hours working at fund raisers, provided eyeglasses and exams for the needy, built ramps for the handicapped, sponsored a Health Fair, prepared fruit baskets for shut-ins at Christmas, delivered white canes and sponsored visually impaired to Camp Dogwood and NC Fishing Tournament.
Many of our members have made contributions to our community, but one is especially outstanding. Lion Ray Nichols has volunteered 1200-1500 hours per year building 30 homes for Habitat for Humanity in the past 12 years!
The club has participated in almost all Lions projects and has been a generous contributor to the Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw. Each year it visits the Lions Cottage at Christmas, has dinner with the boys and gives gifts to each resident, house parents and staff.
