Projects

The Balmacewen Lions Club has been operating in the north-west of Dunedin since July, 1974, currently with thirty members.  The club meets twice a month on the second and fourth Mondays at the Otago Golf Club for dinner with a speaker.  There is opportunity to be involved in various projects which both support our local community and provide sponsorship for personal growth and leadership, also personal leadership growth and opportunities.

These are some projects the club has done for our community:

  • Selling pens as the “Penman” operation for a designated charity
  • McMillan Park on Highgate redevelopment – new path, paved area, planting shrubs, laying drains, resiting and repainting play equipment (2006)
  • Supported local youth on United Nations Internship, Model United Nations, national futsal tournament, Outward Bound course, “Spirit of Adventure” voyages, Camp Quality, disability camp, Sir Peter Blake Trust voyage, rifle shooting world championship
  • Kaikorai Valley Stream environmental project: clearing river banks and planting native trees and shrubs through KVC
  • Street appeal collection for MS Otago and Otago Community Hospice, also Christchurch Earthquake Appeal in 2011
  • Delivering meals-on-wheels
  • Sponsored participants for Berwick Outdoor Experience, 2013-17
  • Charity golf tournament in 2013-16, raising over $7000 for the Otago Community Hospice
  • Dragon boat regatta and crew training (1993-95)
  • Opening interisland ferry Aranui to the public when in Dunedin for a refit (1977)
  • Marshalling at orienteering championships, FB Stadium concerts
  • Splitting and selling firewood, also raffles for firewood
  • Providing defibrillators in secondary schools in Dunedin
  • Liaising with establishment of Otago Campus Lions Club in 2018
