Sight Screening
Athens Lions provides sight screening for McMinn County Pre K students. Screening over 500 students each year. This program identifies potential sight issues a child may develop later in life. By identifying problems early this has saved thousands of children and adults from eyesight issues and blindness.
Diabetes Awareness
Athens Lions sponsor several youth to attend an area diabetes camp. The week long camp provides an environment to teach youth how to deal with and control their diabetes. Thru several activities the youth not only learn about managing diabetes but they also gain confidence.
Glasses Collections
Athens Lions collect used glasses via drop boxes at various locations throughout the community. The used glasses are refurbished and distributed to others with the help of the Remote Area Medical team.
Athens Lions Disaster Relief
Athens Lions have helped provide relief for local areas hit by natural disasters: tornadoes, floods, fires,etc. Providing assistance with food, supplies, eye-glasses. The Athens Lions have helped many local and regional communities rebound from disaster.
Athens Lions Club "Moo Run" 5K run/walk
Athens Lions host the Moo Run, a dairy themed 5K run and 1 Mile fun walk, each June (our local diary month). We have a lot fun and prizes as we raise funds to help support our local projects.
Remote Area Medical
Remote Area Medical (RAM) provide free, quality health care to those in need. Athens Lions Club serve as a community host group and coordinate with RAM providing volunteers, food, lodging, supplies and support components for a weekend clinic in McMinn County. The clinic will provide medical, dental and optometric services and will serve more than 1500 individuals over the weekend.
Eye Exams, Glasses and Surgeries
Athens Lions coordinate with local optomitrist and regional opthamologist and surgery centers to help provide eye care for those in need - based on application approval.
Low Vision
Athens Lions assist those with low vision not correctable with medical or surgical treatment. Lions serve by assisting with interviews, transportation to rehab facilities and help maintain support devices used with low vision.
Community Garden
Athens Lions with other groups sponsored, built and maintain raised bed community gardens at a local Coordinated Charities facility. The garden provides seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables for local folks in need.
Hearing Aids
Athens Lions provide up to four pairs of hearing aids a year. Based on application approval
McMinn County High Clothes Closet
Athens Lions supply and maintain a clothes closet at McMinn County High School. Students with basic clothing needs can select donated coats, pants, shirts, shoes, socks, etc.
Peace Poster Contest
Athens Lions sponsor and coordinate local Peace Poster Contest. Middle school age students compete in local art contest to depict how they feel about peace in the world. Winning poster is submitted to district and international contest. The ultimate winner receives a $5000 scholarship.
Athens City Middle School Academic Excellence
Athens Lions Club host an academic excellence night at the Athens City Middle School. Students, family and faculty are recognized for the students academic acheivement. Athens Lions have hosted this event for over 30 years.
McMinn County Junior Dairy Show
Athens Lions Club each year host the McMinn County Junior Dairy Show. Lions coordinate facilities, judging and prizes for this youth competition. Lions have been manning this competition for over 60 years. Some Lions even get to clean up cow suprises.
