July 2024 to March 2024 in Review...

July 14th (eve), 15th, and 16th - Farmersville Exhibition 2023 at Centennial Park and Centre '76.

July 16th - Lions Milk Draw was held at Farmersville Exhibition. All three prizes have been claimed.

July 22nd - Athens Lions Club Golf Tournament - Cedar Valley Golf Club - sold out!

July 27th - gate support at Delta Fair

August 25th / 26th /27th - Athens Truck Show - canteen / BBQ dinners / breakfasts

September - resumed meetings. The Club approved motions for donations and discussed upcoming events.

October 14th - Athens Food Drive

October 21st - Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides - community participation - 11am registration, 11:30am walk.

October 21st - Euchre returned for the fall season. Euchre runs the third Saturday monthly Oct - May unless otherwise posted. March 16th - Euchre was held at the JBC.

December 3rd - Christmas Parade - 1st Saturday in December with a pub night.

March 12th - Free Skating at Centre '76 and free vision screening for children

  • October 28th - Club hosted a Halloween Costume Party at the Joshua Bates Center in Athens. Great costumes!!
  • Nov 26th - Pub Day with Lion Sean Seabrook and Tanya Haliday
  • Dec 3rd - Pub night after the Christmas parade with Lion Sean Seabrook and Craig Curtis
  • Feb10th - Pub Day at the Lions Club - Lyric Rogers
  • March 9th - Pub Day at the Lions Club - Merkley and the Brayton Boys
  • March 17th - Pub day at the Lions Club - Ted Brayton and Sean Seabrook

June 2022 - June 2023 in Review...

June 11th - the Athens Lions Club supported the Firemans Games by providing a breakfast canteen in the morning. The Club then supported the Firemans Dance held at Centre '76 that evening by tending both bars.

Tickets were sold for a Gas draw with the winner selected in July.

June 28th - annual Lions dinner was held at the Cedar Valley Golf Course.

July 15th - 17th - the Athens Lions Club hosted Farmersville Exhibition with many events and great audiences.

July 21st - Lions club members helped Delta Fair by manning both gates for the day.

August 13th - the bar committee tended bar for a wedding anniversary held at the Joshua Bates Center.

August 19th-21st - Athens Truck Show - Club members helped serve dinner (supper) to the guests Friday and Saturday nights. Members helped serve breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Members ran the canteen throughout the day Saturday.

August 27th - the Club hosted a Golf tournament.

October 1st - President Todd Evans picked up food donations for the Athens Food Bank. That evening, several members tended bar for a wedding reception.

October 5th - a few of the Club members helped with the Pineview Public School track day in Delta by ensuring the runners were making the correct turns on the course.

Euchre Tournaments were held October 15th, November 19th, December 17th, January 21st, February 18th, March 18th, April 15th, May 13th, and June 10th.

November 11th - Remembrance Day - service was held at the Cenotaph.

November 19th - Lion Erik handed out information to bring awareness about Diabetes.

November 22nd - the Club prepared and hosted the annual Appreciation Night which was held at the JBC.

December 3rd - the Club decorated 2 floats for this year's Parade of Lights in Athens and participated in the parade that night. After the parade, the Club hosted many folks for some live music and Christmas cheer at the Lions Hall.

The Farmersville Planning Committee met monthly to prepare / plan for Farmersville Exhibition 2023.

Standing committees met as needed throughout the year.

March 14th - Lions covered the cost for ice time - Free all ages Public Skating at Center 76 

March to July 2023 - tickets were sold for the Lions Milk draw. See July 2023 for the update.

June 27th - Annual year end dinner was held at the Lions Club. ~10 new members were inducted into the Club!!

Ongoing - members of the Club help with set up / take down for the weekly Bingo which is hosted in partnership with the Ladies Auxillary.

Music based events:

  • October 29th - Club hosted a Halloween Costume Party at the Joshua Bates Center in Athens. Lots of smiles and a good time had by all.
  • Nov 26th - Pub Day with Lion Sean Seabrook and Tanya Haliday
  • Dec 3rd - Pub night with Lion Sean Seabrook and Craig Curtis
  • Jan 7th - Pub night with Lion Sean Seabrook and Cory Raymond
  • Jan 28th - Pub Day with Steven Curtis, Billy MacInnes, and Pat Johnson
  • Feb 25th - Pub Day with the Beverly Boys
  • March 17th - Bootlegger Band performed at the Lions Hall for the St Patrick's Day Dance.
  • April 29th - Pub Day with Spencer Scharf
  • May 6th - several Lions members assisted with Zylerfest at the Mallorytown Legion to help raise $$ for Zyler's medical bills.

       The music continued in July at Farmersville 2023:

  • Friday night - The Jordy Jackson Band
  • Saturday afternoon - The Beverly Boys; Cajon and the Hollow Bodies
  • Saturday night - Bootlegger Band
  • Sunday afternoon -  Spencer Scharf; Craig Curtis and Friends

 

Financial Support in the Community

The Club provides financial support for various community projects and organizations with money raised by hosting events / providing volunteer labour for other events as well as tending the bar for private functions.

The Athens Lions Club provides assistance to the following projects and organizations, most of which the Club contributes to annually:

Schools and Education:

  • Athens & District High School Annual Bursary
  • Athens Public Library

Personal Welfare Activities:

  • Local area fire victims
  • Athens Food Bank and Crisis Fund
  • Lions Club International Refugee Relief Fund

Healthcare:

  • Almost Home, a home for out-of-town patients undergoing chemo treatments
  • Cycle for Sight
  • Diabetes Canada
  • Parkinson Canada
  • Rett Syndrome
  • Sick Kids
  • Lions Vision and Hearing

General Community Activities:

  • Athens Cornfest held annually in Athens on the third weekend of August
  • Athens flower baskets which are on display around the village during the summer
  • Lions Camp Kirk Foundation
