Student Award for Post-Secondary Study

or Continuing Post-Secondary Study

Application Information

 

Each year, the Apsley and District Lions Club will provide up to two(2) awards to graduating secondary school students and/or continuing post-secondary school students who have been accepted at an accredited college or university. Only students currently residing (permanent or seasonal) in North Kawartha will be eligible for the award. Preference will be given to students who have spent all or most of their school career while residing in North Kawartha.

The value of each of these awards will be one thousand dollars($1000.00). The recipient(s) of these awards will be decided on by the Apsley and District Lions Club Student Awards Comittee based on the quality of the applications and following interviews with the applicants. The applications must be recieved by the chairperson of the Apsley and District Lions Club Student Awards Comittee not later than May 15th of the graduating/current year.

To qualify for the award, the applicant must meet the criteria listed below:

A. The student or his/her family must be a resident of North Kawartha at the time of application. Prefrence will be given to students who spent all or most of their school careers while residing in North Kawartha.

B. The combined average achieved on their six best year four or just completed courses must be 70% or greater.

C. There must be expressed financial need as indicated by receipt of an Ontario Student Assistance Plan (OSAP) loan/grant. Evidence of that loan/grant must be provided with the application for the award.

D. The applicant must have been involved in extracurricular and/or community activities as a participant and/or volunteer.

E. The student must write an 500 word essay describing the achievements about which they are most proud and their future plans and aspirations. That essay must accompany the complete application form.

F. The student must fill out the Award application in full and submit it by May 15th of the graduating/continuing year.

G. The student must participate in an interview with the Awards Comittee when requested.

The successful candidate(s) will be notified by mid-June and invited to the Lions dinner for the presentation. The actual cheque will be given when the student provides evidence of registration of their chosen school.
