History of the Apollo Area Lions Club
The first Lions Club in Apollo was organized in the late 1930's. The club was active until World War ll began and was disbanded due to the great number of Apolloites who went off to war.
The present Lions Club was formed on October 24, 1949 and was issued a new charter on January 4, 1950. The orginal Lions club was called the Apollo Lions Club while the new club was to be known as The Apollo Area Lions Club. This makes us one of over 45,000 clubs in over 200 countries. The Membership of Lions International worldwide is over 1.38 million members, men and women, serving their fellow man.
"We Serve" is the motto of the Club and the members have certainly lived up to that commitment over the years. The club provides support for the needs of the blind and visully impaired as well as supporting other worthwhile ventures in the Apollo Area. Some of the major projects we have supported or started over the years are: The Apollo Area Little League, Apollo Communitgy Pool, Apollo Memorial Library, Apollo Food Bank, Apollo Community Center, Meals on Wheels, Owens Grove, Apollo 4th of July Celebration, Leader Dogs for the Blind, VIP Sports, PA lions Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind Association, White Cane Day, Food Drive, Support for the Fire Department, Apollo Lions Club Cemetery Fund, and much more. Wherever there is a need in the community, we are willing to help.
We raise money in the community in various ways. Some of these are the "Famous" Lions Brooms, Blood Clinic, various raffles, Mother's Day Rose Sale, Cracker Jack Day, and White Cane Days. Throughout its history, the Apollo Area Lions Club has been one of the most influential organizations in the history of Apollo. As you can see from the previous paragraph, the club has been instrumental with improving the quality of life in Apollo by providing support and active participation for many projects.
Our longest and most successful venture has been the Apollo Lions Little League. We started the league in 1952 and have continued to purchase the charter and sponsor a team each and every year. We also are the sponsor og the Leo Clubs at Apollo-Ridge High School and Middle School. Many young people will begin their journey of service by being involved in the Leo Club.
The Apollo Area Lions Club is proud of its service to the community and of the men and women who are now part of our club. Some of our highlights over the past 66 years have been our many anniversaries of service. We have also had several Lions serve at the District Level, and one who served at the State level.
We now hold our meetings at the Apollo Hose Company #3 on the second and fourth Mondays each month at 6PM. Take some time and visit us and see what we do and how you too can get involved in the largest service organization in the world.
