Meetings

The Apalachin Lions Club, sponsored by the Owego Lions Club, was chartered on February 8th, 1956 with 25 members. The Charter Officers were:

President - Richard Shell
1st VP - Floyd Hilton
2nd VP - Richard Seymour
3rd VP - William Engelhard
Secretary - Robert Donnelly
Treasurer - John Megivern
Tail Twister - Anthony Policare
Lion Tamer. - Ellsworth Tiffany


The club has grown to a current membership of 55 active and involved Lions. There have been many members who have passed through the Club over the years. 

Significant Events

  • February 8, 1956 - the Apalachin Lions Club was chartered with 25 members.
  • March 31, 1956 - 1st Easter Egg Hunt - approx 150 children aged 3-10 took part
  • June 1957 - 1st Broom Sale - $273.60 profit
  • Sept 25, 1961 - Club was incorporated
  • December 1961 - 1st Christmas Basket Delivery - distributed 10 baskets
  • November 1962 - 1st Christmas Seals Mailing - 1200+ mailings - $132.42 profit
  • November 20, 1965 - 1st Sr. Citizens Dinner - 75 seniors & 40 Lions and wives
  • May 1970 - Jack Smith elected District Governor in Fallsburg - borrowed mascot, "Seymor" stolen
  • December 1974 - sponsored Santa Claus line - 400+ calls
  • September 1983 - Sponsored Special Olympics Team - 9 Athletes
  • July 27, 1985 - 1st Ti-Li Picnic - 6 Visually Impaired people attended
  • March 11, 1986 - 1st Ti-Li Social - 12 Visually Impaired people, 24 Lions & Lioness
  • March 14, 1986 - 30th Anniversary Party - seated International President Joe Wroblewski attended
  • June 1986 - Post Office donated trailer to the Apalachin Lions Club
  • May 17, 1987 - Mike Baratta elected District Governor in Lake George - Black Knight visits Hospitality Room
  • June 28, 1987 - 1st Antique Auto Show - barbecued 800 chickens
  • May 1989 - 1st Scholarships - awarded $250.00 ea to OFA, Vestal High and Montrose High
  • July 11, 1990 - Drug Awareness Committee presented a $200 check to Tioga Co Sheriff for the DARE program
  • August 1990 - 1st Back to School Program - gave $40.00 gift certificates to 48 needy children
  • 1992 - Lotto Calendar Sales began - sold 1000 calendars numbered 000-999
  • April 25, 1992 - First Highway Cleanup
  • 1993 - Postal Carriers began Annual Food Drive for our Christmas Basket Program
  • June 1994 - built Pavilion at Muth Park
  • February 1995 - Joker Jackpot fundraiser began
  • July 1996 - Club sponsored a 5 day trip by bus to Lions International Convention in Montreal - 43 people from 9 different Lions Clubs staying in 6 different hotels
  • June 1998 - 2 week trip to Lions International Convention in England & bus tour of Irland- got off to a tough start, bus was stuck in mud in Jensen's field for 3 hours, just barely made our flight out of Newark
  • 1998 - donated the Vern McCarty Scoreboard at Muth Park
  • 1999 - customers select their own Lotto Calendar number
  • May 16, 1999 - John Sobotka elected District Governor in Albany
  • June 20, 1999 - Dedicated the "Baron Chowder Shack" at Firemen's Field Day grounds
  • July 2000 - Club Trip to Lions International Convention in Hawaii
  • 2002 - four Lions clubs in the district sold our Lotto Calendars and shared the profit
  • May 4, 2007 Bob Jensen elected District Governor in Saratoga Springs
  • 2008 - 2 non-Lions clubs started selling our Lotto Calendars and shared the profit
  • June 2010 - Erected sign honoring Astronaut Doug Hurley at Lions Park
